firearm
A firearm is any type of gun designed to be readily carried and used by an individual. The term is legally defined further in different countries (see Legal definitions).
The first firearms originated in 10th-century China, when bamboo tubes containing gunpowder and pellet projectiles were mounted on spears to make the portable fire lance, operable by a single person, which was later used to good effect in the Siege of De'an in 1132. In the 13th century, fire lance barrels were replaced with metal tubes and transformed into the metal-barreled hand cannon. The technology gradually spread throughout Eurasia during the 14th century. Older firearms typically used black powder as a propellant, but modern firearms use smokeless powder or other propellants. Most modern firearms (with the notable exception of smoothbore shotguns) have rifled barrels to impart spin to the projectile for improved flight stability.
Modern firearms can be described by their caliber (i.e. bore diameter). For pistols and rifles this is given in millimeters or inches (e.g. 7.62mm or .308 in.), or in the case of shotguns by their gauge (e.g. 12 ga. and 20 ga.). They are also described by the type of action employed (e.g. muzzleloader, breechloader, lever, bolt, pump, revolver, semi-automatic, fully automatic, etc.), together with the usual means of deportment (i.e. hand-held or mechanical mounting). Further classification may make reference to the type of barrel used (i.e. rifled) and to the barrel length (e.g. 24 inches), to the firing mechanism (e.g. matchlock, wheellock, flintlock, or percussion lock), to the design's primary intended use (e.g. hunting rifle), or to the commonly accepted name for a particular variation (e.g. Gatling gun).
Shooters aim firearms at their targets with hand-eye coordination, using either iron sights or optical sights. The accurate range of pistols generally does not exceed 100 metres (110 yd; 330 ft), while most rifles are accurate to 500 metres (550 yd; 1,600 ft) using iron sights, or to longer ranges whilst using optical sights. (Firearm rounds may be dangerous or lethal well beyond their accurate range; the minimum distance for safety is much greater than the specified range for accuracy). Purpose-built sniper rifles and anti-materiel rifles are accurate to ranges of more than 2,000 metres (2,200 yd).
Is there a limit to how many firearm transactions you can have in the Oregon or has my luck simply ran out?
I've recently taken up shooting after a long hiatus in college for many years. My 1st transaction was a purchase in Feb 2022 followed by 4 more in April, June, July and August. All were...
This irritates the heck out of me!
I sold an 1885 vintage pistol gripped Ballard to a friend in Montana. Sent it USPS Priority Mail on Sept. 1st, and it went from my local station to the Portland, Or. main distribution center. At that point it seemed to vanish, and no sign it ever left the...
So, I read the law for Oregon and I am legally allowed to transfer a firearm to a close family member without going through an FFL. My mother is considering buying a firearm from me. Where it gets tricky is that she lives in Washington. Do we need to get an FFL involved for this transfer if she...
Yesterday afternoon, I stopped by my local UPS customer center in Tualatin (not UPS store) to drop off some ammo I recently sold to another member here. Exactly like I have a dozen times before in the past
The employee behind the counter refused to accept my package, and told me I'll have to...
I'll start with the classic Dirty Harry quote modernized for the times
"Uh uh. I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire fifteen shots or only fourteen?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a 9mm Glock, the most powerful handgun in the...
My son and his girlfriend bought as 33' Fifth Wheel trailer as an alternative to $2000 a month apartment living in Eugene. The space rent is $500 a month, but they can take it with them when they move and save up the $1500 a month to purchase a site built house eventually. What are your...
Can a "Firearm" like the Troy A4 be legally converted to a pistol or 16+ inch barreled rifle and then back to a "Firearm"?
Similar question for Mossberg Shockwave. Can a 18+ inch barrel and stock be swapped in to make it a shotgun and then be converted back to a "Firearm" again?
Selling your firearm?
Well be careful out there.

I realize the Shockwave Style Firearms are not shotguns but this category seemed most appropriate for the question.
I am guessing rifled chokes are legal on shotguns?
Would they be legal on Shockwave, Tac 14, etc style firearms as well? I would like to incorporate one into my 50 Beowulf...
Could a homemade smooth bore firearm with shorter than 18" barrel be legally made using a fresh AR15 receiver? If so, what grips would be ideal for this configuration?
Are there any regulations that a person should be concerned with by adding a folding stock adapter to an AR15 type firearm that doesn't have a stock or brace attached to the extension tube. There should not be any length of pull issues on a pistol with no brace, since a pistol is designed to be...
Came across a pre-estate sale where after chatting, they said that they have a vietnam era colt m16 for sale. There is no serial number on it. Is this normal for a rifle of this era?
Also, when asking about the lack of a serial number, they claimed that in Oregon, one can possess 1 "ghost gun"...
Let's face reality, most gun violence is perpetrated by criminals. The anti-gun crowd is not interested in solving this violence. They simply want our guns and see gun violence as a tool to take them. There must be some people in the middle who are sincerely interested in reducing gun violence...
My worst purchase so far was a s&w Governor. Dont get me wrong it was really well built but it was huge and only accurate with 45acp. I still am not sure why i bought it as its to big for carry and lacks real power for hunting. I guess it would be a decent home defense gun but i have better...
If you had to choose from a bolt, lever, pump, revolver, break open firearm as an offensive weapon to clear out building full of bad guys, what type and cartridge would you choose.
I would choose a lever action rifle in 357 or 44mag.
