firearm
A firearm is any type of gun designed to be readily carried and used by an individual. The term is legally defined further in different countries (see Legal definitions).
The first firearms originated in 10th-century China, when bamboo tubes containing gunpowder and pellet projectiles were mounted on spears to make the portable fire lance, operable by a single person, which was later used to good effect in the Siege of De'an in 1132. In the 13th century, fire lance barrels were replaced with metal tubes and transformed into the metal-barreled hand cannon. The technology gradually spread throughout Eurasia during the 14th century. Older firearms typically used black powder as a propellant, but modern firearms use smokeless powder or other propellants. Most modern firearms (with the notable exception of smoothbore shotguns) have rifled barrels to impart spin to the projectile for improved flight stability.
Modern firearms can be described by their caliber (i.e. bore diameter). For pistols and rifles this is given in millimeters or inches (e.g. 7.62mm or .308 in.), or in the case of shotguns by their gauge (e.g. 12 ga. and 20 ga.). They are also described by the type of action employed (e.g. muzzleloader, breechloader, lever, bolt, pump, revolver, semi-automatic, fully automatic, etc.), together with the usual means of deportment (i.e. hand-held or mechanical mounting). Further classification may make reference to the type of barrel used (i.e. rifled) and to the barrel length (e.g. 24 inches), to the firing mechanism (e.g. matchlock, wheellock, flintlock, or percussion lock), to the design's primary intended use (e.g. hunting rifle), or to the commonly accepted name for a particular variation (e.g. Gatling gun).
Shooters aim firearms at their targets with hand-eye coordination, using either iron sights or optical sights. The accurate range of pistols generally does not exceed 100 metres (110 yd; 330 ft), while most rifles are accurate to 500 metres (550 yd; 1,600 ft) using iron sights, or to longer ranges whilst using optical sights. (Firearm rounds may be dangerous or lethal well beyond their accurate range; the minimum distance for safety is much greater than the specified range for accuracy). Purpose-built sniper rifles and anti-materiel rifles are accurate to ranges of more than 2,000 metres (2,200 yd).
I use ChatGPT. I posted a question to it this morning for fun (and to see if I would get a reasonable answer about a firearm, without crazy bias or "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I cannot do that" type of response.
The answer seemed reasonable. I thought I'd mention it here in case one had not...
We have seen many ways taken to limit access to firearm ownership. The most visible are things like age limitations and background checks, but there are more insidious methods, some of which are indirect. Yesterday, in a Senate Banking Committee hearing, an excerpt from a Federal Reserve Bank...

Somewhat just for fun here.
What are some weapons / items you could use for home defense that ain't firearms...?
And yes I know that home defense is much more than firearms or weapons...
Again this is somewhat for fun , or for thinking outside of the box , so to speak.
Below are some of my...
If you have had a firearm stolen was the thief an acquaintance/person you know?
Did you have the serial number of the firearm stolen?
Do you keep a list of your firearm serial numbers? If so where/how do you keep the list?
Just curious, Thanks.
The Supreme Court of the United States will hear oral arguments Tuesday in Garland v. VanDerStok, a case focused on the ATF's unilateral action to redefine what constitutes a "firearm."
The case revolves around ATF Final Rule 2021-05F, which placed new controls on gun parts kits and firearms...
I live in an apartment. I spoke to the company that provides my Renter's insurance, and they don't cover firearms, so I'm looking for another company that might insure my firearm collection. None of my firearms are antiques or collector's items. However, including optics and accessories, I do...
With regard to 'current events' any guesses as to who or what will be the first to start screaming about more gun control?
This was brought up in the news earlier but nothing specific.
I have 26 rifle rods and an assortment of handgun hangers that I no longer need.
Rifle Rods go into the barrel of your firearm and attach to velcro or gun safe carpet on the shelf above the firearm for secure storage. They work well and help you store more firearms than other methods.

argument is that if the OR resident fails the bgc that the FFL cannot then release the gun back to me since I am a WA resident.

I'm sure everyone has a favorite shootout scene from a movie or TV show, share it here! I figured this would be an interesting topic of discussion.
For me, it has to be the ending scene from Wind River where Lambert is picking the dudes off with the 45-70.
I have a Khaki-Blanco can that I recently found in a box of items in my reloading shed( well actually in the boxes of stuff that were once "IN" my reloading shed).
I am no longer collecting stuff and think it is just rare enough to maybe be a good talking point in someone's collection.
But, I...
...Say you walked into a gun shop and there it was, with the little handwritten tag dangling off it. You hadn't planned on spending the money, but you're not gonna leave the shop without it!
What did you buy?
Assume it's a decent deal. Maybe 10-15% below market.
