first time
Events are often triggered when a stochastic or random process first encounters a threshold. The threshold can be a barrier, boundary or specified state of a system. The amount of time required for a stochastic process, starting from some initial state, to encounter a threshold for the first time is referred to variously as a first hitting time.
In statistics, first-hitting-time models are a sub-class of survival models. The first hitting time, also called first passage time, of the barrier set

{\displaystyle B}
with respect to an instance of a stochastic process is the time until the stochastic process first enters

.
More colloquially, a first passage time in a stochastic system, is the time taken for a state variable to reach a certain value. Understanding this metric allows one to further understand the physical system under observation, and as such has been the topic of research in very diverse fields, from economics to ecology. The idea that a first hitting time of a stochastic process might describe the time to occurrence of an event has a long history, starting with an interest in the first passage time of Wiener diffusion processes in economics and then in physics in the early 1900s. Modeling the probability of financial ruin as a first passage time was an early application in the field of insurance. An interest in the mathematical properties of first-hitting-times and statistical models and methods for analysis of survival data appeared steadily between the middle and end of the 20th century.
Hello!
I've been creeping around the forum before registering, but you guys have a lot of good info up here. I just wanted to introduce myself and hope to learn more.
Hello fellows!
Decided to try my hand at bagging a Tom this season. Signed up for the ODFW's turkey hunting clinic, this Saturday at EE Wilson.
Had a few questions for those with more wisdom than myself.
Best Camo patterns for Spring Vs. Fall? I'm going to do some scouting up at White...
I bought a Beretta M9-22 .22lr pistol a couple of months ago and this last Friday was the first time I got a chance to shoot it. My wife and I put about 150 rounds through it and didn't have any issues at all (not that I was expecting any) while we were shooting it.
It shot well and since it...
Hello! Well figure I'd come out of the shadows and say hi. Been a member since 2013 and just been creeping around reading posts and what not.
I moved here from Hawaii in 08 and fell in love with the beautiful NW! Met my wife here 8 years ago and now have a 6 year old son, a 2 year old...
Hey guys, just got some lead, a lee production pot, and a 230gr mold to cast some subs for my 300blk.
I dont have a thermometer that will work with the lead for the moment, but i tried casting it hot, cool, inbetween, with the mold cold to hot, didnt seem to make a difference. 99% of my...
Hi,
I've never done any hunting before, but hopefully this weekend I want to get out and hunt rabbit. I've taken a basic hunter's ed course, but outside of that, I have no idea where to start.
My understanding is that in Oregon, most rabbits are unprotected game, except the white-tailed rabbit...
Hey guys, I’m looking to get my first suppressor and would love some insight on what’s good out there. I’m hoping to keep it around 7-$800 with the stamp. It will be mounted on my Rugger 556 MPR but I’d like to have a quick detach brake for it. What are some good cans that will last me a long...
I'm planning to visit Colorado and Utah around late September/early October of 2018, and I'm planning to bring my handgun when I travel. I'm not worried about carrying my handgun in state of Utah since they honor Oregon CHL. However, the state of Colorado doesn't honor Oregon CHL nor any...
I went out to a clear cut on Friday with a young guy who purchased a AR 15 from me a few years ago. First we practiced some carry hand guns then plinked with AR 15's a bit at 70 yards. Next we set up a paper target and shot with my CZ 455 Precision Varmint at 145 yards. Lots of wind and mirage...
Fired over 100 rds of PMC Bronze 90gr. FMJ without a glitch. The recoil was soft. Was able to put them all in a 8" bull at about 7 - 10 yards. Didn't have the problem of shooting low to the left. However, when I tried out the Underwood 65 gr. Xtreme Defender ammo they performed on target...
So, some of our betters said that the best BBQ in the world is Brooklyn BBQ. Gentrification and all.
Why Is Brooklyn Barbecue Taking Over the World?
Naturally some people have a problem with that...
I was pretty nervous I'm not going to lie. I never done it before I didn't know what to expect, was I going to do something wrong break a rule that I wasn't aware of? What if I wasn't has good as I thought I would be, would I be ashamed to show my face again? I could tell that the girl I was...
I've lived in Oregon my whole life and am an avid outdoors kind of person. I bookmarked NW Firearms a while ago and is my go to forum for any information regarding Oregon and Washington carrying. I'm 23 so new to concealed carry but familiar with the firearms my family has had since I was a kid...
Three times in my life I have seen elk with tremendous racks. Not among the vast amount of Rocky Mountain elk but next to good ole I 5. I would like some input about the two seasons for coast elk. I will likely hunt the second as it is longer. The Stotts Mtn area is closest. The Alsea and Trask...
Absolute noob here, please be gentle.
I'm trying to make the move from "messing around at the range" to "training in a direction" and as much as I hate competitions I know that competing is the only way to really improve.
So I'm looking for practical shooting competitions in the Willamette...
The Try Guys shoot Guns for the First Time
Guy 1: I don’t like guns. at all.
Guy 2: I don’t have a negative opinion about guns, I do have negative opinions about people.
Guy 3: I’ve been invited to a gun range before with friends, and I said no, and I just sat in the car outside of the gun...
I am a dude in my 20's and I plan on hunting a deer with a gun in 2017.
I come from VERY hardcore anti-gun family, so no one thought me this stuff at all, which is why I am here. I do know I need a license to hunt, but do I need to take a hunting class?
If yes, where do I go? Im near the...
So i got my Oregon CHL today and carried for the first time when i went out for my usual walk. What i discovered is holy crap my fully loaded 1911 feels heavy on the waist (OTW). Was actually way less fussy over the position of my gun than i anticipated but every time i did it just felt like it...
I recently bought my first house. To say the PO had no cares about security would be an understatement, they went out of their way to remove fences, and generally make home modifications that make me slap my own forehead.
Im curious as to what my fellow preparedness minded NWerners think would...
I took the plunge tonight and upgraded my PSA barrelled upper with a Midwest Industries T-series free-floating handguard- despite the intimidation factor I decided to attempt it myself, since I assembled my first build solo for the most part. I was really surprised how a handguard with multiple...
