Survivalism is a social movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists or preppers) who proactively prepare for emergencies, including natural disasters, as well as disruptions to social, political, or economic order. Preparations may anticipate short-term scenarios or long-term, on scales ranging from personal adversity, to local disruption of services, to international or global catastrophe. Survivalism may be limited to preparing for a personal emergency, such as job loss or being stranded in the wild or under adverse weather conditions. The emphasis is on self-reliance, stockpiling supplies, and gaining survival knowledge and skills. Survivalists often acquire emergency medical and self-defense training, stockpile food and water, prepare to become self-sufficient, and build structures such as survival retreats or underground shelters that may help them survive a catastrophe.
Use of the term survivalist dates from the early 1980s.

Why do many people not have basic emergency supplies?

I was talking with a woman here in Salem the other day about prepping. I was buying several large cases of bottled water and she was asking if I was having an event. When I told her I was replacing some emergency supplies I'd gotten into, she made some snide comments ridiculing "preppers". I...

    Prepping should be FUN!

If Prepping Isn’t Fun Then You’re Doing it Wrong! If Prepping Isn't Fun Then You're Doing it Wrong! An excerpt: "How many gardeners complain about raising a garden? Not many, most do it because it’s fun and they like the challenge of planting, nurturing and harvesting. Same goes for hunters...
