Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition that considers words and thought as tools and instruments for prediction, problem solving, and action, and rejects the idea that the function of thought is to describe, represent, or mirror reality. Pragmatists contend that most philosophical topics—such as the nature of knowledge, language, concepts, meaning, belief, and science—are all best viewed in terms of their practical uses and successes.
Pragmatism began in the United States in the 1870s. Its origins are often attributed to the philosophers Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey. In 1878, Peirce described it in his pragmatic maxim: "Consider the practical effects of the objects of your conception. Then, your conception of those effects is the whole of your conception of the object."

    The AR15 isn't practical

Yes, I know that's a click-bait title, but that 's what I was told last weekend. I did some shooting with friends. There was an AR pistol present and I mentioned to one friend that I thought that particular gun wasn't very practical, more of a "range toy". He replied with a very sincere...

Youth group for practical skill building?

So, earlier this morning I, along with her mother and grandfather, walked my daughter to her first day of Kindergarten. It is amazing how they go from the little fragile bundle brought home from the hospital to a school-aged kiddo. Raising and training up a child is the chief responsibility of...

    Tactical to Practical

I keep an IFAK on my body armor carrier for work. I added one to our diaper bag at home. Wife thought I was going a little overboard. Until today. My daughter had a HUGE blowout. Out the sides, up her back, everywhere. She is a fiesty 10 month old and it can be impossible to keep her hands...

    Practical rifle at TCGC

Good morning, several years ago I shot practical rifle for about a year and had a blast. I want to come back out and shoot some more! I’m no longer a member of Tri-County and wasn’t sure if I was able to attend matches? On the site it says events are not open to the public but I read...

Any practical rifle, or 2 gun competitions near Salem, OR?

I've been watching In Range TV on YouTube for the past few months and I really like how they set up their competitions. Is there anything like that in the Salem area? I went to a 3 gun match at ARPC and I'm not really a fan of how they treat the shotgun from a practical standpoint and I also...

    AR .22lr for training?

As the title suggests, I am looking for a complete AR platform .22lr to train with (yes I know I can buy just the upper and slap it on one of my lowers, etc) but I am looking for a dedicated AR carbine for range plinking/training and getting others familiarized to shooting on the platform (esp...

New to PNW, looking for ranges and practical shooting events

Hello all, I moved to Corvallis for school about a year ago and have been loving the PNW. Just getting back into shooting sports after a fairly long hiatus due to separating from the Navy and moving cross-country but ready to jump right back in. Last time I was heavily involved, I was doing...

    first time practical competition...?

Absolute noob here, please be gentle. I'm trying to make the move from "messing around at the range" to "training in a direction" and as much as I hate competitions I know that competing is the only way to really improve. So I'm looking for practical shooting competitions in the Willamette...

A practical and useful .38 shot cartridge?

Factory shot cartridges are about a buck fifty apiece and that just rubs me the wrong way. I made up some .38 shot cartridges using over and under shot wads made of cardboard punched out of a battery package that seem to work pretty well as they are thick and flat. I used a load out of the...
