Or a similar situation that changed life as we know it. One day it's surfing the Internet, Starbucks drive thru, complaining about the slow waiter who was bragging about his PhD at dinner, the next day all heck breaks loose and the store shelves are picked clean. Rolling blackouts precede weeks long blackouts and fuel is no where to be found. Some speculation on the ATS forum. Would you survive what Venezuela is going through?, page 1.

Things will become gritty. Many if not most of us prepare for such events. Many do not. Mentally, this will be a game changer for society.

Good points to ponder, the main issue though is that Venezuela is not in the position with its citizens to rise up effectively against their oppressor. They have been oppressed to the point of complacency and now at this point in their societal evolution the have been stripped of any real ability to resist what is happening.

How would Americans react? I'd hope that this doesn't happen in the next 50 years but there are hopefully some old devil dogs out there that wouldn't hesitate to put a 1911 up and end this sort of crap given the chance.

Society will not be the same until the generations that are experiencing this event are dead and gone, this would hold true to this nation as well. I cannot see that if this happened in my lifetime how it would allow me to revert back to the stage in life before it happened. Forever changed and never the same. Millions in the US would be ready to squash any hint of an oppressive government (I would hope) and the pendulum would swing wide back towards liberties and freedoms. There may though be a need for this type of a reset to get back to a nation of the people and by the people.

I will be bugged in with access blocked and in Survival Mode with the neighbors here all loaded and locked and ready to rock !
Will have emergency Communications Ham station operating for Sit Reps and there will be no size limits and screw the restrictions.
Looters will be fed to the Wolf dog....

First out comes the gimp suit, of course, then its My opportunity to claim a local Bi-mart store as my own!
But not before empting a liquor store into my newly obtained uhaul box truck and my dilutions of grandeur fade. Fun to play the "what if " game...

If people get full blown Socialism that they are screaming for it will not change over night here. It did not change over night there. That place was an oil rich country. It goes down hill Government takes over the means of production. Same thing will happen here. Slowly life will get worse for most, while a few at the top will get more power. That is what its all about, power. Most of the people with big money who are pushing this have more money than they could ever spend. What they want is power over people. Sadly a LOT of rubes fall for giving up freedom.

Sounds like a prime opportunity to rid all levels of government from the vermin infestation that's been experienced over the past half century. A reset to a Constitutional form of government at the Federal, State, County and City/Town levels would indeed be a refreshing change.

I wasn't trying to compare Venezuela to the U.S. per se, as we have a pretty solid infrastructure with established industry standards, national culture, trades and practices that have been fairly consistent for decades. Venezuela does not and they have fallen apart pretty quickly, especially since the guns have been taken away. We are not immune though to similar circumstances. How long would it take, a month, six weeks before society as we know it collapsed? It could be a huge Cascadia event or an EMP from a bad actor followed by an invasion after our society had reached a low point.

"Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times."

I too believe we have enough "Strong Men" that remain.

I suspect the two biggest changes for me are going to be a significant increase in the amount of physical labor that is required to work the land and livestock to maintain self sufficiency and having to deal with those who seek to take what my family has built over the last 4 generations. Thankfully, I have plans for both of those should it come to that.

Yah, it would be bad. Real bad.

Folks should think on how long they could go without NEEDING to go to a store. For ANYTHING.

Not want to go, mind, but NEED to.

Priorities IMO, should be:

1. Health. Spiritual, physical & financial.
2. Water. Not necassarily stored, but at least a means to a "safe" potable, and "convenient" source. Or one which can be made potable with relative ease.
3. Food you eat now.
4. Security.
5. Shelter.

There was a book that came out 8-10 years ago that talked about getting out of the cities and 5 miles away from any major freeway/highway...mainly for a Cascadia Subduction event or like kind of Natural disaster. Their thinking was the city folk would come out of the cities looking for food, water and the requirements of life so to speak...interesting times.
