Does anyone know why French, (and maybe soon to be British), small arms
are so heavily sought after in the secondary import market in the USA ?

Because the sale advertisement usuall reads something like this:
NEVER FIRED, DROPPED ONLY ONCE, SLIGHT SCRATCH ON BUTT STOCK.

My thoughts are: Socialism, a choice between a noose, or a firing squad.
Believe it or not, I was brought up quite liberal in politics here in the
People's Republik of Massachusetts. Finally started to think for myself at
about 14 yrs old. Forged a document to enlist at 16, and was provided an
all expense vacation courtesy of USMC to warmer climates and enjoy the
fireworks in Jan. of 1968.

One on One the French soldiers were fine. Their tanks in WWII were superior to anything the Germans had. Their leadership blew big chunks. Read a little about the Foreign Legion and their combat in Algeria and Indochina...then get back to me,

How pathetic. . .

I would be embarrassed to pose for the picture. . But then again, I wouldn't have called the cops over one .22 round.

Real battlefield pickups like quantities of ammo go in my ammo cans for last ditch zombie apocalypse use
