Oh, let's not go there. There is no evidence to link this to some Machiavellian plot involving the UN arms trade treaty. That kind of speculation doesn't accomplish a thing.
...I thought the UN WAS a Machiavellian plot

Wonder if he can be tried as an enemy combatant since he was all suited up and such, at least he won't have rights then.....
For the UN Gun Treaty conspiracy theory crowd: Colorado Batman shooting shows obvious signs of being staged
I think there has to be some kind of extended background/medical/psych tests that can be developed.
I'm kind of at a complete loss at what the world is coming to. I'm a fierce defender of our second amendment rights, a cwp holder, a hunter, a member of the NRA, but at the same time am not completely against advancing gun control. The problem with that whole matter is, you give an inch, they want a yard. I think the bans are completely ridiculous. And a waiting period obviously doesn't help (ie the Virginia campus murderer purchased his hand guns a month apart) but I think there has to be some kind of extended background/medical/psych tests that can be developed. The guy in Virginia had been diagnosed medically as unstable. Who knows if an extended waiting period for this guy would have helped, my guess is probably not

I'd have no problem waiting longer for that new gun if a more effective waiting period/background check were somehow developed. Sure I'd love to have that shiny new Sig the second I pay for it, but my beat up old Springfield 1911 will protect me and my family just as well while I wait.

The guy in Virginia had been diagnosed medically as unstable. Who knows if an extended waiting period for this guy would have helped, my guess is probably not with the scary amount of preparation he put into it, or if a full scale medical evaluation would have deemed him unstable. But maybe some sort of extended evaluation other than checking boxes that say "I have not been deemed mentally defective, I am not an unlawful user of marijuana" followe by a background check for previous crimes could prevent even a few of these obviously unstable evil people from the truly heartbreaking events.

Just some thoughts keeping me up tonight. Entirely fed up with hearing about these tragic evens of spineless, heartless killers. Just wish there was actually something that could be done.
Thanks!
You bring up some good points. I do not think the 'gun control' route will have any effect whatsoever on these events, for reasons others have already well-stated. However, I think we could have a very positive effect on reducing these types of events by having health care available for everyone, including quality mental health care. We know that a combination of medication, therapy, and real community connection does work to help people suffering from psychosis. The tools are there, and anyone who says 'there will always be crazy people' doesn't know what they are talking about and is actually contributing to the problem. Real humane treatment is being rationed by a predatory for-profit health care industry, and cut backs in government support. This is costing lives.
Quality health care and mental health screening by who? Ever been to a VA hospital? Read some horror stories about Britain's health care system, IF they can get admitted it isn't uncommon for patients to die of thirst while waiting for care.
If a Government central authority decides who gets treatment and drugs can you sue them for malpractice? What's your plan for recourse?

Crimes committed by mentally unstable, dangerous people isn't a gun problem IMO. There shouldn't be any blame placed on the gun or who sold it or any discussion about gun rights in relation to this case. 100% responsibility and blame should be placed on the criminal. Not his mental state either, just him. I agree with whoever said earlier that we need to stop making excuses for these types of criminals. When the heck did we buy into the notion that a person who harms other people isn't really bad?.... that it's just their brain that is, or their mental state is. Come on people..... It's one in the same. A person who is so unfit and dangerous to society that they harm other people or themselves IS A BAD PERSON, and has zero place in society. We shouldn't be wasting our time or resources on these types of people.
What I get tired of just as much as these atrocities, are the excuses people make on the killer's behalf because they're too chicken bubblegum or PC or whatever to deliver real justice and do what needs to be done to make the world a safer place. And because of this, horrible things like this shooting keep happening. We should have zero tolerance for these kinds of criminals. If found undeniably guilty of their crime, they should be made an example of and eliminated. Protect the good and functional people of society, save taxpayer money, clean up the gene pool, and get rid of these dangerous people.
We already have zero tolerance for these types of crimes. Do you think this guy's scared of the death penalty? Oh please. The issue is prevention. After the crime happens it's too late.
