Schools have a massive problem managing pedestrian and vehicle traffic daily...and then throw in WhoHoo Flu protocols for the past two years.
Around here, traffic issues around schools at certain hours have gotten much worse since the Covid thing. I think many of the kids who used to ride the bus have been held back from doing so by their parents. Who choose to personally drive them to school now. Which results in a lot more congestion than pre-Covid.

Having extraneous people mobbed around schools can't be a good thing. From what I've seen on cable TV news coverage, the shooting sites are soon mobbed with anxious parents, news crews and assorted looky-loos. Might be a good thing to close off the area by several blocks ASAP. And after some point, probably too many "first" responders.

Well it wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be true given how big of a Cluster Eff this thing is. My next question, however, would be...how did the shooter get in? Did he shoot the lock or something? Or was the door only closed but not locked?

Greg Ellifritz has done an analysis of the shooting based on the most current information. If you don't know who he is, I have pasted his bio from the article. The article is a bit long but it's very good IMO.

I know a little bit about active shooters. I have successfully completed more than 35 active shooter/school security training classes. I've formally published a total of 387 articles on the topic. I was a cop for 25 years. I taught active shooter response at my department for 15 of those years.

I've provided consultation to more than a dozen schools about active shooter response strategy. I helped develop Tactical Defense Institute's Active Killer Response class and was lead instructor of that class for about 10 years. I continue to teach active shooter response and counter terrorism classes commercially through my company, Active Response Training
I even responded to a real-life active shooter call in my police career (where we actually made entry and didn't stand outside waiting for SWAT). I personally escorted the responding medics into the structure and helped them carry out the injured (and dead) victims. After finishing clearing the building, I led a team of three other officers who found and arrested the fleeing killer.

Automatic lock didn't automatically lock.

The "authorities" set out telling one lie after another as soon as this was over. It was easy to see those in charge were left thinking they made a mess. So they set about trying to make up a story. Problem was the faster they made up BS stories the faster they got proven to be lies. It's to the point that sadly I will not believe anything they say now. If they tell me it will get dark tonight I would want to check it with someone else. At this point if the people in charge are talking? They are lying. :(

I'm not sure why you have "authorities" in quote marks like that. It's the local police. They are the ones lying

Still seems pretty important to make sure the door was secure. It wasn't just to keep the rain out. I don't know the level of training the school staff gets but even a 17-18yo recruit is taught when to pay attention and what is important.

People lost their lives, and the repercussions (like those across Europe, Canada and Australia) is always strike while the bodies are still warm. That's not me, it's the leadership of those countries being disrespectful of the dead and politicizing those murders.

If the shooter used a Nancy Drew lock pick set to cleverly break through a vault fortified doorway (all after shooting a billion rounds outside the school resulting in several phone calls to the community protectors) and then shot up classrooms full of students who were actively calling those same protectors to come rescue them, would that put the fault onto the cops who stood around outside rubbing their bubblegums for an hour waiting for the bad man to stop being bad? Or would it still be the school staff members fault who was just trying to quick get a task done while taking their break from actively monitoring the students?

Some questions all but answer themselves

By "authorities" I mean the people who are being sent out to stand in front of camera's to talk to "news". I have to "guess" that the rank and file Cops are not randomly holding press conferences all over town at random times. I would have to take a wild guess that the people who head out to a lot of microphones and camera's are being told to do so by someone in charge.

What's the point of closing a door for SECURITY reason with out checking to be sure IT IS IN FACT LOCKED!

I am a retired LEO and 15 year school employee! I'm also certified to train the NIMS for government facilities like VA hospitals and schools, The National Incident Management System is a nationally recognized system for dealing with incident like earthquakes, floods and active shooters.

At schools there seems to be a "Pollyanna" attitude that "it's not going to happen here"! It's obvious to me that happened here. Why else would an employee leave for any reason and return! And close the door and not verify that it LOCKED keeping the threat outside the premises where the children are sheltered in place?

My uneducated guess was that the teacher was poorly trained for such an occurrence, maybe had experience with doors auto locking when they close, putting the rock there would suggest that that is true, why block it open if it's not going auto lock?

It's a shame that there was no one there that was highly trained for exactly these kinds of situations, had an institutionalized anti-Pollyanna attitude, had 40% of the city's budget and had even bragged on their Facebook page about LARPING in local schools to deal with this exact situation

Yeah, dang shame there was no one like that there
