What Id like to do, is get some good friends together, and plan a three day weekend, or even a whole week, and have someone drop us off in the MT Hood national forest, with backpacks, small game hunting rifles, fishing poles, ect., and do a survival camping trip. Ive already got eveything I would need to do it, and I think it would be a great learning/refreshing experience. I used to do stuff like that when I was younger, but havent for years. Another member from this site and I, 78 crewcab, are loosly planning a trip like right now and have been raiding the local army surplus stores and sporting goods stores to get the gear needed.

if there is alot of crap going on on the ground, then the air would by pass alot of chos.

also, the major water ways could be clear enough of debris. the only issues would be collapsed bridges.

I know dandelions and cattails are edibles. Can you give us a short list of some other common edible plants?

Stinging Nettle:
The tender tops and shoots are best for greens. Use caution when picking. Cook these tops like spinach.
Save the cooked water and drink like tea for rich in minerals.

Clover:
All parts are edible. The stems and leaves can be cooked and eaten like fresh leafy vegetables. Tea can be made from the flower heads. Roots are starchy and can be used in stews or such.

Lamb's Quarter:
Young leaves and tops are good in salads or can be cooked like spinach. Very rich in Calcium.

Salmonberry, Thimbleberry, Red and Blue huckleberry, wild strawberry, salalberry, oregon grape.

Just to name a few.

Just knowing the name of an edible plant isnt enough. If your interested you should go buy the book I mentioned above, Nature Bound Pocket Field Guide, It describes in detail most NW plants, with a picture for identification, and a description of its uses. Some plants have alot of vitamins and minerals, some are good for curing the craps, some are good for headaches, and some are good for eating. It also has the same descriptions for poisonous plants, and their severity and effects.

For me and mine, we would Bug in. We live far enough out side a major metro area that I know we would be okay. Neighbors around us are like minded and watch out for each other. I have a Bug Home bag in every car and the family knows to get home at all cost.

If the close metro area was nuked that would be another story but may not make a difference at that point.

An earthquake would be our most likely shtf senerio, my house may not survive but my out buildings would fair better.

Mt Hood popping off could cause some trouble but we are fifty miles from it and not in any low areas that would flood with piroclasic flows.

Too far inland for tsunami.

Gov't gone wild could be a near problem. Know alot of local cops that won't follow the lead of the current admin.

Dumba$$ people who haven't prepped could be a problem, but my 12ga and 44mag should deter them some.

Youve got the right set up IMHO bud! I know its not easy for city dwellers to fell confident in Bugging In. They should worry, as looting and pillageing would likely happen in the cities first. But for those of us that live in small, more rural communities, the best course of action is to stay home and support and be supported by your neighbors. Keeping to your own turf gives you many advantages, such as knowing the land, knowing the people, and knowing the local resources. These are thing you might not have if you leave.

Hey guys, this is kinda off topic, but I wanted to post it here to get you opinions. I posted this also in the FEMA death camp thread. Check it out.....

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.

John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946..

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.

John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.

Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.

Both Presidents were shot in the head

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.

Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln .

Both were assassinated by Southerners.

Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.

Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born

in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.

Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford'.

Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln ' made by 'Ford'.

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.

Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

WHO FIGURED THIS OUT?

INCREDIBLE

I know what NBC is - but everytime I see that I first think of the TV network :s0112:

Then I go "duh, he means nuclear biological chemical" ... still catches me off guard from time to time.

Glad I'm not alone...I pondered on NBC for awhile and then moved on, not getting it. But then does this mean that ABC means aliens biological chemical and CBS means chemical biological socialism? Think I'll stay with Fox News since they are not a threat!

A very interesting thread. Before too many decide to bug out to the forest for safety here in the NW you might want to see what some of the lovely government servants have prepared for us at this site. www.saveelk.com a little wolf awareness might be added to your bug out kit.

Good point, always be aware of your surroundings. I always set up motion detectors around the perimeter of my camp, usually 200-300 feet around. Any movement will set off my detectors giving me enough time to react if wolves, cougars or bears might be approaching.

What type of "motion detectors" do you use?

Just go to any home depot or fry's and get the wireless driveway motion detector for around $20. Mine has 120 degree/50ft view and a 300-400 ft range to the receiver. It has visual/audible alarms. I put up 4 ($80) around my camp site about 1ft off the ground. Make sure to tape up the seams on the detectors for moisture protection That's a cheap way for a good night's:s0129:

Outstanding!! I'm amazed that I hadn't seen those before. :s0155:

If you are out of ammo, and you have a choice between a bat and a katana sword. What would you guys choose and why? I would choose the katana. It can cut, kill and looks more intimidating (fear factor).

There are lots of harmless nocturnal creatures in the woods/desert, wandering around, curious enough about that big plastic smelly thing to creep up for a look see. Don't those things produce a lot of false alarms set up all around your camp like that?

That's why I put the detectors a foot above the ground. Bigger animals like bears and cougars would stand higher than the harmless animals.

I would also go with the katana. The bat seems to be big and bulky. Your katana can also be used as a big survival knife.
