I am surprised that nobody has mentioned The Brushfire Plague yet. Set in and around Portland. I picked up the first book at a gun show a few years ago and couldn't put it down. Though I've only read 2 out 3 of the trilogy, this is the series that got me into doing any kind of prepping.

" oh look, those Roman fellows are coming.. wonder if they are friendly. "

"Would love to see Karate Man on the big screen mowing down a huge group of biker gangbangers with a happy mode AK."

Having participated in that social millieu I can categorically state that a "huge group of biker gangbangers" would be quite well armed, and they will shoot back or maybe even first.
When the cops get there nobody saw nothin'.

A modern remake film of the pre WW2 classic novel "When Worlds Collide". Also try to tie it in with "After Worlds Collide".
That reminds me of another book by Philip Wylie; the 1954 Tomorrow! It is about an nuclear attack on the US and the aftermath. It is a bit tendentious at times as the author is pushing for civil defense, and it is graphic for that era, but still might make for an interesting film adaptation.
