"I keep two full mags in my Glock case. And the ARs & AKs all have loaded mags. No one will be 'dropping' by my house uninvited without acknowledgement," reads a 3-year-old posting.

While living in California, Harper-Mercer graduated from a learning center for students with learning disabilities and emotional problems. His parents divorced when he was a teenager and he lived with his mother.

This mother should be in jail and charged with this murder spree!!!
How is she not held responsible for this!
She knew he was mental and kept loaded guns obviously not locked up around the house.

And how was he not reg flagged for the BGC? Unless all the guns were in his mom's name?
Just like Sandy Hook, the parents are clearly the main source of fault here.

NOT THE GUNS!

Just like Lanza's mother, if she was not killed I bet the Left would have persecuted her!!!!

If he was 16 I would agree. But 26 is adult.

He is mentally handicapped, lives with her, and she knows he has mental issues.

Your comment doesn't make sense.

If I showed negligence in securing my firearms around a roommate that goes on a shooting spree and I knew he had mental problems wouldn't I be at fault?

If she was white do you look she would be treated the same? Or he lived with his white father and he was a gun nut/ righty?

I hope she gets charged, and at very least is sued by the victims and victims families.

I recommend the whole article.

"Mark Kelly, founder of the gun-control group Americans for Responsible Solutions, was asked on CNN last Sunday about the Oregon college being a gun-free zone that "might attract bad guys."

Kelly claimed that less than 15 percent of mass shootings have occurred in a gun-free zone. But Kelly was relying on a study sponsored by anti-gun advocate Michael Bloomberg that based its numbers on whether newspaper articles mentioned if a shooting occurred in a gun-free zone. That isn't very useful. The media haven't cared about this fact. Determining a more precise number requires a lot more research.

What motivates mass public shootings is also quite different than gang fights, but Bloomberg's study mixes the two together.

Since at least 1950, all but two public mass shootings in America have taken place where general citizens are banned from carrying guns. In Europe, there have been no exceptions. Every mass public shooting has occurred in a gun-free zone. And Europe is no stranger to mass shootings. It has been host to three of the six worst K-12 school shootings and by far the worst mass public shooting perpetrated by a single individual."

I am concerned about going off half-cocked on this issue.

We know that denial is not just a river in Egypt.

But, what is she expecting from her son? Is there a history of violence? Attacks on neighborhood pets? Other behaviour which should lead a reasonable person to have to take action?

Could she take action about an adult child? At what point does she no longer have control?

Would he have passed the Background check on his own?

If he took her weapons without permission isn't that theft? Were the weapons he used to do the deed hers?

Compare this case the Reynolds High School, that was a child. Has the family been sued successfully?

I think the folks at Reynolds took security more seriously than did UCC.

I think there is a great deal we have yet to learn.

Problem is we are making assumptions (myself included) based of from the news and online chat.

We will never get all the facts.

She admitted to keeping loaded guns in the house, she knew her son had mental issues and was having issues, and didn't secure the weapons. She admitted in online posts about the guns being hers. Ahe has an obligation as a firearms owner to protect the people around those guns from themselves and to the public to not put them in danger.

Personally I beleive this is a breakdown in parenting in the rise of mental handicap and illness where parents refuse or are delusional about their children's stability and risk to others.
How many times has this happened and we don't wake up.

What really angers me on this issue is we are the ones that suffer, instead of people changing and placing blame where it lies they blame guns and limit our freedoms associated with them.

Well, no one wants to think of their child as Satan and watching the news, everyone in prison is a good boy.

Honestly though, what if it was your child. are you going to tell whoever that you child may be a threat to himself or others. 1st thing they are going to do is come and take all your firearms, your child will vist a shrink, then get a prescription to some anti psychotic drug and they will call it good, oh and you will never get your guns back as long as they are living there. and in leftist land, maybe not even then.

It's hard to say. My step-brother is in prison for trying to kill his wife and children. To say it was a shock to all of us was an understatement. We knew he suffered from bouts of depression as he had tried to commit suicide unsuccessfully prior to that incident. No one would have imagined he would have done this. Nice guy, good job, successful, clean cut, intelligent - and depressed.

I think sometimes you can see it and sometimes you can't. Probably why so many people when interviewed after someone goes ape sh!t crazy, that they just knew them as quiet, reserved, friendly and kept to themselves - they would NEVER have imagined they would do something like that.

So, in those cases, how can you prevent what you can't see coming? In the Sandy Hook POS's case (I won't use it's name), I think many people could have seen that coming. For this new POS? Hard to say, I don't think we know enough facts just yet.

This is true. People snap, there are usually signs, almost always signs, but no one thinks their loved one would do these things.
To me it sounds like this mom wasn't all that "normal" mentally either.
I think any firearms owner has an obligation to keep their arms safe. Or as safe as possible.
If you have a kid with a mental disorder then you should be even more careful.
I have a neice right now that was diagnosed with a really high form of autism. I can tell you right now I wouldnmt leave her alone for 5 mins with my daughter, and she's only 6!

Parents never want to admit there's something wrong with their child. I know parents that went years before acknowledging their kid has a mental or physical issue.
Just like kids who do drugs or drink, oh my kid wouldn't do that.

If there's anything we can do. It's to not click on these new stories about this!
It only bolsters their numbers and raises ad revenue. There's a reason why they glamorize these shootings, and that's because it makes them money! Only view news sites that are for gun rights and against the big media that we all know has been bought.

I cant see the airport from my house just got home and there are some loud helicopter noises coming from the airport. Maybe they are bringing in people will be over that way in about and hour will take some pictures if applicable.

Apparently, Chris Mintz the hero at UCC is declining to see the president according to a family member of theirs on facebook. But its facebook so not sure 100%.

If this is true it made my year ! That would be my pick for patriot of the year.

Press Conference this morning by the District Attorney :

ROSEBURG, Ore. - As the shooter emerged from a building on the <broken link removed> campus, having already shot at least 18 people in a morning writing class, Det. Sgt. Joe Kaney and Det. Todd Spingath were running toward the scene.

"They bailed out of their car and ran straight to the gunfire," said Rick Wesenberg, the Douglas County District Attorney.

The officers saw muzzle flash near the entrance of Snyder Hall as the gunman fired on them.

The detectives, both in suits and without body armor, fired 3 shots.

Two hit a wall near the gunman. The third hit the gunman in his right side.

"Once the shooter was wounded, he entered the classroom again. He went to the front of the classroom, where he shot and killed himself," Wesenberg said. "Once the suspect engaged the police officers, he did not shoot another student."

The details are part of the investigation required when police in Oregon use deadly force.

Police Chief Jim Burge said Kaney and Spingath "ask that your attention be on the victims and families of this tragedy, not on them."

Kaney is a Marine Corps veteran with 23 years on the Roseburg Police Department.

Spingath is a US Air Force veteran with 16 years on the Roseburg Police Department.

"I want everyone to know of the selfless acts of these officers," Wesenberg said. "They had little regard for their own safety. They saved many many lives that day with their heroic acts."

This is a developing story. This story will be updated

Press release from Oregon State Police

The Oregon State Police was given the task of investigating the Officer Involved shooting at UCC.

Senate Bill 111 requires when deadly physical force is used by police officers that a separate agency investigate the incident.

The Oregon State Police concluded the investigation and presented the information to Douglas County District Attorney's Office.

The following information was provided by DA Rick Wesenberg:

I have reviewed the facts of the case. I have determined the deadly physical force used by the officers against the shooter was justified. I would like to provide the following details pertaining to the investigation:

At 10:38 AM Douglas County Emergency Communication received the first 911 call that an active shooter was at UCC.

From witness statements and 911 calls, moments before, the shooter had entered the classroom and began shooting students.

Detective Sergeant Joe Kaney and Detective Todd Spingath from Roseburg Police Department heard the dispatched call and responded from approximately 5 miles away.

Two Troopers from the Roseburg OSP office also responded and all four officers arrived on the campus at 10:44 AM. Upon the arrival of the police officers they heard a volley of shots. The police officers witnessed the shooter in the doorway.

Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath were in plain clothes they were not wearing their bullet proof vests as they exited their vehicle. The police officers ran towards the sound of gunfire and attempted to gain a better vantage point of the shooter. Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath knew there were at least 35 students in one of the classrooms and knew if they shot they risked the chance of shooting innocent people.

Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath observed the shooter in the door frame of the entrance to Snyder Hall and they witnessed the muzzle flash. The shooter shot several round towards Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath.

Seconds later both Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath felt they had a good target. They fired a total of three rounds at the shooter. Two rounds went into the entrance wall of Snyder Hall near where the shooter was standing and one round struck the shooter on the right side.

Once the shooter was wounded, he entered the classroom again, went to the front of the classroom, and shot and killed himself.

I want everyone to know the selfless acts these officers made in responding to the scene. The officers had little regard for their personal safety and saved many people that day with their heroic acts.

Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath used their training and discipline to determine the best time to take a shot at the shooter and once the suspect engaged the police officers he did not shoot another student.

These men saved lives this day.

The following information was provided by Chief Jim Burge:

Before I share profile information about Sergeant. Kaney and Detective Spingath, I would like to express my gratitude to all the public safety personnel who responded to the shooting at UCC. Without the response of the dedicated first responders the magnitude of this event would have been multiplied.

As police officers we know that we could be required to put our lives on the line at any time to help protect those in need. The shooting at UCC showed what amazing character your police officers have and how they are willing to risk their lives for our community.

Detective Sergeant Joe Kaney is a former Marine and has been employed with the Roseburg Police Department for 23 years. Sergeant Kaney has received a Medal of Honor and Purple Heart for a previous shooting where he was shot in 2005 from the Oregon Peace Officer Association.

Detective Todd Spingath is a United States Air Force veteran and has been employed with the Roseburg Police Department for 16 years. Detective Spingath is a recipient of the Medal of Valor for the same 2005 shooting.

I am very proud of how Sergeant Joe Kaney and Detective Todd Spingath, as well as all public safety organizations responded and conducted themselves during this ordeal. I, like many other people in this community, consider them to be heroes - they knew that they could be injured or killed during this confrontation as they ran toward the sound of gunfire.

I have spoken with both officers and I can tell you they do not want to heralded as heroes - they feel they are only first responders who got there first and did a job they were trained and entrusted to do.

Finally, Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath ask that the focus of your attention be on the victims and families of this tragedy - not on them. They ask for privacy and the opportunity to settle back into their routine of providing public safety service to this community.

The two Detectives were very brave and I commend their willingness to confront the shooter as soon as they arrived on the scene. It takes a special kind of bravery to charge into oncoming fire.

Take note: The suspect retreated and committed suicide when confronted by armed individuals, just like almost all of the "Free Fire Zone" shooters. (The movie theater clown is the only one I can remember that didn't kill himself.) I would like to point out however, the nearest help was 5 miles away, giving the shooter an eternity with his victims.

Would it have been any better if one of the students had been armed? Couldn't have been worse. He shot himself at the first sign of resistance.

Would the shooter have chosen differently if he had known there was a possibility of armed resistance? Probably.
