That's a "good" sign, so far, in regards to a likely justified use of deadly force.

They are, but like most other places, there's risk to the arresting person.

As usual there is so little info its hard to make a guess. If the thief tried to use a weapon on the guard? Then the guard will have a good chance. If the thief had no weapon? Not sure how this is going to shake out. You know the thief is going to tell the story in such a way that he is the victim here.

The security guard was a fool. Hes not LEO. Observe, call the police. THATS ALL!
Unfortunately, while he may not face criminal charges, there is always the Civil aspect, not to mention that his employer may not be happy and terminate him.
Time will tell.
