I don't understand why gun owners get riled up about this. The Democrats have always wanted to ban as many guns as they can, any way they can. It isn't like this is the first or even hundredth time they used a factually incorrect or wild story to promote a ban.

Kind of sounds to me like the anti-gun lobby is cranking up the anti-handgun rhetoric in the USA too. Possibly they are going to attack assault rifles plus handguns and then after "negotiating" with R legislators their fallback will be "ok keep the handguns but we want to ban assault rifles". Just guessing here.

IMO ATF has been laying the groundwork for an assault rifle ban ever since the new administartion came into office. In the aug 1, 2022 pistol brace regulations (not finalized yet) that are coming they redefine a pistol as a rifle and use a "scorecard". This gives ATF the precedent and a blueprint to brand whatever they want as an "assault rifle" since they can redefine gun classifications at will and make "scorecards" that force existing non-NFA guns into an NFA category.
