I follow this with national and international news. Religious news too. Discussions, debates and studies on a fairly regular basis. Not to mention that Christianity has made a big comeback in Russia. Some say Putin himself has played a major role in revival of the Russian Orthodox Church. Communism is an aetheist ideology, so no, they are no longer communist. But some people won't believe it till they read it in some fringe publication from the fever swamps.
I mentioned one of my late Mom's old HS and college friends.Ive even got a hammer and sickle tattooed on my arm.
This!Communism is a economic and social system they havent practiced since the early 90's and really about a decade before that. . Communist isnt just a word for someone you dont like or who does things that threaten your hegemony. Most Americans have ZERO idea what communism was in practice. The days to day stuff.. You know, how it really worked at least in the Soviet Union. The command economy state owned businesses are a thing of the past. The kids of government owned company employees dont get three months of summer/work camp any more. Literally nothing remains of the apparatchik process . Guaranteed employment is over. Russian businesses are privately owned and go out of business if they make no money. The Russians are rogue independents on the world stage at this point. If anything the modern Russians are near pure capitalists . Kind of like the US in the robber baron era. Communists? Ha. Not even slightly. They have their sphere of influence they protect , they sell natural resources to the outside world, some pretty good weapons , nuclear reactors and thats about it. Matryoshka dolls. We have no economic leverage against the Russians and their economy is remarkably self sufficient compared to ours. Sanctions mean nothing to them because they are oversanctioned already. Theyve been kicked out of every world club but the UN there is because they dont give a damn about our rules. Can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.
This! Its not really a dictatorship. Putin keeps getting reelected because well, quite frankly he is doing exactly what the Russians want. There is no real opposition to his parties rule. None that would sway the polls by more than a few points anyway. There is nothing Communist about it. He's just that popular in Russia. We hear about the opposition this and that but theyre really just fringe groups without a lot of following. Communism is a economic situation not a means to dictatorships. Plenty of non communist dictators out there. Again this comes around to the ignorance of what communism is/was in Russia. Having spent a lot of time there in the 90's and early 2000's I'd have to say they are about as Communist as Germany and less so than France.
This!He expelled George Soros and his left-wing NGOs from Russia, and spared the Russians from the moral and societal degradation now plaguing the United States. Russia may be a dictatorship, or an oligarchy, how ever you may choose to look at it, but it can no longer be considered communist by any measure.
Amen! There has been an active war in the Donboss region for some time. We see repeated media lies about it here in the USA, but get little else. The US should stay out of it. It's not our fight. Donboss is right on the Russia border. It is their fight and their interest. Not ours. Let the corrupt Ukranians deal with it themselves instead of paying off our President and his relatives under the table with our own US aid cash.
If Biden wants a war, send Hunter over and let him see what he can do. Leave me and mine out of it.
This is NOT directed to you, LWH. It is to the other person but thank you for your reply here. Was 50,000 dead draftees in the Vietnam War coddling? This playing generation against generation is as old as screaming racist every time folks don't like the world they are in. Blame the corrupt politicians, they are the full reason the country suffers.
My late husband served over 20 years total. See my other post.Zacklies!
I am part of that generation he names, and I did my 20 the hard way, doing things no mothers son should ever have to do, or bear witness to, and I take great offence to that statement and demand he apologies right quick and in a hurry like!
THIS!FIFY. If we're gonna play the blame game, let's do it right.
Putin is not interested in rebuilding the USSR. He wants to return those areas which are majority populated by ethnic Russians to Russian rule. The conflict with the Ukraine is over the Donbass region, which is majority Russian. He did not take all of Georgia, which he easily could have, only the majority Russian areas. Crimea was historically Russian, not Ukrainian. During the era of the USSR, a lot of Russians migrated to non-Russian areas. Traditional boundaries were blurred during this period, and when the USSR split up, a lot of ethnic Russians were left behind. This is the root of the conflict. It has nothing to do with communism or restoring the USSR.
Putin doesn't care about the great reset. He is not a globalist. He is most certainly a Russian nationalist. The old cold war stereotypes just don't fit in the present day..
Putin plays on a few themes, one of which is the Motherland must be protected and hostiles on the border is a fail at that protection. That's the basis of his 'red line' rhetoric. Doesn't matter that times and tech have changed, that message resonates and will for... generations if not forever.
Anyway, I'll say it: there will be blood. In Ukraine. In the next few weeks. A combo of wanting to blood some new org/tech in the Russian military, weak leadership in the US/Europe, having the advantage economically, insignificant opposition at home... basically little/no downside to a little adventurism. So yeah, he'll do it.
If I'm wrong I'll be disappointed if y'all don't make fun of me!
http://thesaker.is/why-russia-didnt-shoot-anything-down-yet/Hard to say, but there has been a civil war raging there for quite some time. Here's 2 more local and more extensive similar views:

That does not in any way describe what Communism was in Soviet Russia in actual practice. I like to describe Soviet Communism as what would happen if labor unions took over the country then expand on that idea.Isms:
Communism: The word Communism is derived from Karl Marx's seminal work, The Communist Manifesto. Communism is the final form of world government attained when a successful proletariat revolution eliminates all social and economic class differences for everyone, and all members of society equally share in the benefits of production. There would no longer be any gap on the planet between rich and poor, between owners and workers, between oppressors and oppressed. Everyone would have equal social, economic, and political status. Because Marx's idea of Communism requires revolution on a global scale it has never been achieved, despite that North Korea, Vietnam, China, Cuba, and Laos proclaim themselves to be Communist countries.
Because there has never been a truly communist government. They get stuck in what they call "the dictatorship of the proletariat" because true communism is unobtainable due to human nature to relinquish power. That does not in any way describe what Communism was in Soviet Russia in actual practice. I like to describe Soviet Communism as what would happen if labor unions took over the country then expand on that idea.
And none of that matters. Theoretical Communism was never a viable real world condition. If we are talking about Soviet communism and whether what they have now is Communism or even slightly comparable to what they used to have the answer to both questions is no. The modern Russians are NOT Communist and the Oligarchy of the 90's and early 2000's is largely gone too . Soviet Communism was what it was and it was peculiar and nuanced to be sure but thats not what they have now.Because there has never been a truly communist government. They get stuck in what they call "the dictatorship of the proletariat" because true communism is unobtainable due to human nature to relinquish power.
