Yes....many reasons.
Here is one :

Something to consider is that many folks....don't own or have an interest in firearms.

So...if they take the time to look something up firearm related...
More often than not it will be a common source like Wiki , various main stream news media , what their friends think....
All of the above may not have a good working knowledge about firearms.

And since the number of firearm owners may be out-numbered by those who don't...
Information gets lost , twisted or the like...which when repeated , gains common acceptance as being true.

One could even say that of gun owners as well...but that is a topic for a different thread.

Brainwashing

Somewhere along the line too many people have lost the natural urge to "Question".
Questions leads to conspiracies. Accept the narrative. Any errors in facts are just Symantecs. Not enough actual difference to matter. Say like an AR15 and M-16. Sure, one's heavily regulated, unaffordable to most, has military specifications and the other is $400 available at most sporting good stores.

One of the critcal tenets of the political system; "If you say a lie long enough and loud enough it gains the semblance of a truth".

Then to that you add the fact that ANY gun 'can' be a weapon of war, and obviously "War is bad"; so, simple math, A + B = C.

"Gun can make war, war is bad, thus gun is bad."

And there are just enough sheeple, "useful idiots" around to continue the twisted arithmetic and call it truth.

The internet makes everyone an "expert" in their chosen field. Even though in reality they don't know their head from their a$$.

The internet is the place you can do/say what you want without fear of retaliation or consequence.

Yup. Definition of "Expert" broken down. Ex - has been. Pert - drip under pressure. Most true experts are reluctant to, or avoid using that title for themselves.
