Ok, pandemic lady takes the cake. She's the weirdest and most paranoid of the bunch imo. I think it's her hypochondria that went viral. :s0114:

Anyone notice that 'the experts' on this show think all of the other scenarios are unlikely, with the exception of a pandemic? Thoughts?

Hyperinflation? NOPE

The show was “OK”, did learn a few tips, you have to remember “Prepping”; can be for “Natural” disasters too, I do understand that the show is heading toward “The end of World” scenario. But like ALL good “Boy scouts”; Always be “Prepared”. Only commit is, at the end the “Shows” “Specialist” comments about the individuals (why they are Prepping) is “DOWN” played..

The New $80 Billion "Gasoline Price" Consumption Tax | EconMatters

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 The New $80 Billion "Gasoline Price" Consumption Tax
By Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge

Although U.S. demand for crude oil has fallen by 1.5 million barrels per day since 2007, anyone spending more than a few minutes on the road, watching TV, or surfing the internet will be more than unpleasantly aware of the rapid rise in gas prices recently. As we noted earlier (chart below), following January's record high average gas price, February just surpassed its own record and TrimTabs quantifies the impact of this implicit tax on consumption, noting three key factors that will remain supportive of high oil prices: Central Bank liquidity provision (ZIRP), political tensions, and implicit USD devaluation.

Critically, around 70% of the benefits of the payroll tax extension has already been removed thanks to 60-80c rise in gas prices nationwide whose growth has far outstripped wage and salary growth in recent years. As Madeline Schnapp points out, while the latest round of oil speculation is likely to end with a pop, she doubts oil prices will drop much below $100/bbl as the erosion of purchasing power from high energy prices is here to stay.

TrimTabs Macro Spotlight: Surging Gas Prices Unintended Consequence of Zero Percent Interest Rates and Trillions of Dollars Pumped into Financial Sector.
Spike in Gas Prices Equivalent to $80 Billion Annualized Tax on Consumption. At Current Gas Prices, 70% of Benefit from Payroll Tax Cut Wiped Out.

We spent some time recently driving on Interstate 5, the main north/south highway in California. In little more than a month, the price of gas rose from $3.69 per gallon to $4.49 per gallon, an increase of 80 cents, or 22%. After filling our tank the last time, the change from a hundred dollar bill was just 69 cents. Ouch!

Our experience prompted us to take a closer look at what is driving fuel prices higher. Although U.S. demand for crude oil has fallen by 1.5 million barrels per day since 2007, three factors are likely to remain supportive of oil prices:

•Dictated interest rates are at or near zero in much of the developed world, and central bankers have flooded the financial system with enormous amounts of freshly printed money. One of the logical places for this liquidity to flow are highly liquid, highly leveraged commodity futures contracts. The rising number of outstanding contracts helps push prices higher, which in turn draws more speculators into the market. This speculation was the primary driver of high oil and gas prices in the summer of 2008 and is likely contributing to high prices today.
•Political tensions are heating up between Iran and the West about Iran's threat to block the Strait of Hormuz. The fear premium from this factor is probably $8 to $10 per barrel of oil.
•There is a strong negative correlation between oil and gas prices and the value of the U.S. dollar. The Fed's money printing puts strong downward pressure on the value of the greenback. While a weaker dollar boosts U.S. exporters, it hurts consumers, who face higher prices for commodities that are produced overseas but are priced in dollars. While the value of the dollar (DXY=78.8 on February 23, 2012) is well above its trough in the past four years (DXY=71.7 on March 17, 2008), it is well below its peak (DXY=88.5 on March 9, 2009).

The 60-cent to 80-cent increase in gas prices nationwide over the past two months is equivalent to a $60 billion to $80 billion annualized tax on consumption. Since the payroll tax reduction is estimated to have put $114 billion back in consumers' pockets, the recent run up in oil has negated about 70% of the benefit of this tax cut.
Looking at the increase from another point of view, we estimate the annual increase in wages and salaries over the past 12 months is only $185 billion. A $60 billion to $80 billion annualized increase in fuel prices effectively wipes out about 35% to 45% of the increase in wages and salaries.Taking a longer view, gas price increases are far outstripping wage and salary growth. Since 2005, gas prices in the Los Angeles area have more than doubled, rising from an average of a little more than $2 per gallon to $4.35 per gallon in the past week. Meanwhile, wages and salaries rose only 15.4%.

While the latest round of oil speculation is likely to end with a pop, we doubt oil prices will drop much below $100 per barrel. The erosion of purchasing power from higher energy prices is here to stay.

Real-time income tax withholdings suggest real wage and salary growth was barely positive in January and February. If fuel prices hold steady or rise further, we expect real wage and salary growth to turn negative.

Bottom Line: Rapidly Rising Fuel Prices Put Sluggish Economic Growth at Risk.

You might also mention the Oil refinery in Bremerton Washington that caught fire and isn't producing anything right now. Which is the most direct reason that fuel has gone up as much as it has here in the PNW.

Admittedly, and I really don't know why, I turned on the end of the last episode. The lady in the corner house that bought $30k in freeze dried food because she believes martial law will kick in at any time.

Then she moves into right next to a Capitol building to keep an eye on things. :( Doesn't a possibly rational well-meaning person like this have anyone to advise her as to her foolish plan?

Just what good is all that freeze dried food supposed to do for her if house to house raids are conducted as she is saying? All her food will be confiscated for the state. Your 'rights' are suspended and one of those 'rights' is (hoarding) food.

She is also sharing her plans and stores on TV and with all her friends at work, etc. Good luck lady. Congrats for being smart enough to know things will be bad, but you might as well have flushed that $30k down the toilet (if specifically what she believes will happen, will happen).

These people have got to be getting a large amount of $$$$$ for doing these world wide television shows, or they are just plain brain dead and someone needs to pull the plug, like right now, because if the are not getting a large amount $$$$$ for the shows they are clearly oxygen thieves.

If I was a prepper, i would still think this show entertains some but is kinda stupid. People showing their secret locations of stashes, and business owners telling everyone in the world what they have, which was more valuables in total price of guns and assets on his home, and then the dude that you can tell is some business guy that thinks he is a outdoors guy, teaching his kids everything, and the only guns they own are .22, in many varietys, including a Ar- style, and seeming soo confident on his gun skills. this Dumb azz grabs a rifle a foot above his kids head and is checking something, racking a few rounds out, and while doing this is moving the end of the barrel towards his kids head. Dont worry, he is suppose to be experienced in firearms. LOL, this puss probably hasnt even shot a .45 hand gun before and I would guess he lives in California. To top it off, he puts his hand over the barrel and almost shoots his thumb off. lol, where do they find these people. the next guy, owned a business, and brags about the (my guess, $over 20,000 in guns), and he spends somewhere around $700 a month on goods to store. Calling sign, hey, come on over to my place. this show is getting ridiculus, the last guy is going to protect his family in new york city, in their ghetto apartment, with the pop. in new york city, and how small it is, WITH a KNIFE, cause he cant own a gun. ok, im done, no more. I will just not prep and still have better common sense plans and actions than these nuts.
tell me if im wrong, is prepping for you, on this thread, more of a hobby or just something your really into, like some people hunt, or fish, or do you really think in the next 15 years, which if your 50-60, might be the total amount of the rest of your life, due to mult. factors, the world is going to end, so instead of enjoying it, you are going to spend your time and money into worrying about it?

It is a hobby (among several) - but a hobby taken up based on where I believe we are in history. I'm not in the TEOTWAWKI Mad Max camp though, so to me "prepping" is simply becoming more self-sufficient in a society where living standards are likely to erode. Instead of stock-piling pallets of designer-MREs and ammo I have concentrated on things like transforming our yard from ornamental to edible, creating sustainable alternatives for necessities, focusing on acquiring and using non-powered hand tools instead of power tools, and things like that. A lifestyle change hobby really.

Discovery channel is starting to promote their own version of Doomsday Preppers
I'll try to catch the name and when it airs next time I see the promo. Nothing I can find on the Discovery web site as yet.

I can completely understand with your take on it. I can see doing things in this matter like you do later on in life for me, when i have more free time.[

Doomsday Bunker. Looks like they are focusing more on people who are preppers and gun owners. The previews showing a bunch of practicing with handguns and ARs. Also looks like the are focusing on bug out shelters as well.

... you are going to spend your time and money into worrying about it?

That is another bit of misinformation. Many like myself have prepped to some degree, because the FACTS call for it. No different than all the other things people do to 'insure' themselves except for it takes a mental leap. The piece of the puzzle that is missing for many is intentional deceit and manipulation.

A rational person, weighing the evidence, must accept that the status quo cannot and will not continue.

Like most people that have prepped to some degree, we still do the same things you do. Still enjoy life. Still do things. Don't dwell in a funk. The difference is the peace of mind you have knowing that you are WAY ahead of the curve in the preparedness dept.

The idiots depicted on this TV show are there to make people who prepare look like obsessed mental midgets and manic depressives. That is the purpose of a corporate TV hit piece. The flock have been manipulated for so long they can't see it.

It all boils down to Normalcy Bias. If you can't break through it, you are pretty much screwed. The vast majority cannot, simple as that. http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/

Theres a new show airing on the Discovery Channel next Wednesday @ 10pm called Doomsday Bunkers... It looks like it is going to be very similar to Doomsday Preppers, but more focused on their, well, bunkers. ;)

I take these shows with a grain of salt, and I think of them as what they are...Entertainment that I may or may not learn something from. I make my hubby watch with me so I can say "See, Im not THAT crazy" or "Arent you glad Im not like her/him". I like to think of it like its Portlandia...Kind of a prepper satire in a way. Like it or not, this is how a lot of people see us, why not get some entertainment out of it?
