I am still using my first generation of Speer G2 147gr 9mm as range ammo since it does not do well in 4" barrels. My new Glock 17 has a 4.49" barrel. Can I use it for self defense now? No big deal if no one knows the answer since is makes good range ammo.

Do your own test. Make some ballistic gel or do a Paul Harrell meat target.
In any case, it's likely to be ok for defense use. I've yet to meet a person that could tell you whether a bullet is expanded properly when it's lodged in their shoulder. Or brain.

I run Speer Gold Dot as my carry ammo. Shooting a Glock G45.
I still have some older non-G2 Speer Gold Dots in 124gr and 147gr. I was talking about the first generation G2 147gr made in 2014 did not expand properly from a 3" or 4" barrel.

I think I will use the G2 9mm as range ammo only. I don't want to cast ballistic gel or anything like that to test like 8 boxes of G2 ammo.

This is my answer as well. If I have any apprehensions about ammunition performance I just don't use it in my carry guns. Best to just put it to use during practice and carry something with proven performance.
