<- Why there aren't any school shootings in Israel!
Teacher with long gun slung over her shoulder!!!

I think we need to bring back firing squads, even if ammo is scarce. Maybe I'll donate a case of 5.56 or 7.62X39 to make it happen!

The question was weather Oregon should uphold the death penalty, Seeing how there were "no" names on your list from Oregon I'd say it really has no bearing on the question. Florida though seems like maybe it has some issues?. Id say in Oregon we should use the firing squad or hanging again, Or better yet let the family of the ones murdered carry out the deed with a public stoning (no LOL not pot!) The worse the penalty the better the deterrant.

My biggest problem with sending anyone to death row is what if you were convicted wrongly, and knew you were innocent like these poor guys in the list below.

Another Person Freed from Death Row.

Via Radly Balko:

"Alfred Brown released from prison. Convicted b/c grand jury foreman was a cop who threatened Brown's alibi witness. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2015/06/10/texas-death-row-inmate-alfred-dewayne-brown-is-released-from-prison/…

Phone records confirming Brown's alibi were found years later in the home of a homicide detective.

He was on death row 10 years.

He's the fourth death row exoneration this year, and the 12th since 2013. "

For violent crime where there is little doubt who did the crime a definitive yes. I will believe that it doesn't work the first time I see an executed criminal reoffend.

Late to the party but studies have shown that the punishment is not a deterrent for murder.
But yes Oregon should have capital punishment along with every other state.
On the other hand how much does it cost the states to fight all the appeals after sentencing someone to death?
Just as much as housing the prisoner? Has to be a little more since they are housing and fighting the appeals.
Just let them rot in solitary

Late to the party but studies have shown that the punishment is not a deterrent for murder.

I think that people knowing they could die for crime, gives them some reason not to kill someone, versus the chance of jail. Now the type of capital punishment is important. At a mininum, death by hanging is scary to most.

There are time where it is a slam dunk, you were caught in the act (camera) or some other "there is no way you didn't do it". When there is ZERO chance of mistake, Pictures, DNA.. then Fry the SOB!

Actually,my ex wife's best friend did studies ,in prisons, interviewing murderers and violent criminals.
The majority of them stated that the repercussions to their hurting people wasn't any deterrent to doing the crime, when it happened.
Murder and most violent crimes are crimes of passion and will be done,no matter what the consequences are.
Now for individuals like you and my self, there are plenty of folks alive because it's illegal to kill them.
To most that have crossed that line, not so much

Just stating what people much smarter than me have actually done studies on.
Oh,she was a professor for some time in Seattle

I agree. But in my very limited criminal opinion, that's because the current punishments are not tough enough. Once a Main Street hanging is scene by the new crop of young losers, they will think twice. DUI? Lose license for 10 years. Rape? Hanging. Drug dealing? Lose a hand, and go to jail for 20 years.

I could care less if it works as a deterrent, let's give it a try anyway:D
It is about time to try something.Problem is,prison is big money now

Saudi Arabia's new king has more then tripled their public executions (beheading's) and it still doesn't stop criminals and pycho's from smuggling drugs, rapes or murders.

I think at some point there will be many factions that will execute there own type justice. I really do. I think law enforcement is/and will continue to lose control. Right or wrong, they will.

If the death penalty is an option---yes. But not 14 years (average time on death row) later, get it done
by noon the following day. I think juries would be more reluctant to impose death, but there are crimes
so heinous that they need to die for the sake of society.

I beleive in the death penalty for a few reasons:

  1. Cost: In 2010 it cost on average $31,286 a year per inmate (see study below). Why should we have to pay to house and feed these people for the rest of their lives? I want lower taxes and for my tax dollars to be used to benefit my society, not keeping evil people fed, housed, educated, tying up the court system.....
  2. Retribution: Once you take someone's life/rape them/molest children/other acts of violence you should have to forfeit your life.
  3. They are oxygen thieves: Most of these people are the dregs of society and are taking recourses that can be better used elsewhere. 99.99% of rapists and molesters never change. They will keep doing it until they die. They may have been convicted for one crime, but most of the time they have done it numerous times prior to being caught.

Now, if someone wants to keep one of these dregs locked up for life, they need to figure out how to pay for this without using tax dollars. If the family wants to pay for the criminals up keep, fine. If some benefactor like Bill Gates wants to pay for it, that's fine also. If someone put up a trust for this person, that's OK also, but as soon as the money runs out, so does the inmates time. I just don't want to pay for them, even vicariously.

I also believe that if a person goes to prison they should have to pay the cost of keeping them incarcerated by working off their debt. I also believe that if they don't work, they don't eat or get any other perks like sleeping in a bed or heat in the winter or air conditioning in the summer and their debt increases.

I support the death penalty. As do the majority of Oregonians, as evidenced by multiple votes in favor of it over the years. My question now is do we continue to have all death sentences temporarily commuted under this governor like we did with the last governor, or will she actually follow the will of the people.

Yeah, dumb question.

Will of the people . . .Will of the people . . . The governor babe "don't need to abide no steeekin' " will of the people. If she wants your opinion she will give it to you.
