Washington Encountering coyotes in the neighborhood...

There have been numerous coyote sightings in my area as well as pets being attacked and/or killed...

I've seen quite a few and ran a couple off which were attacking the neighbors dog, I'd have shot them if not for the inopportune backstop


this got me to thinking... What IS the legality of shooting these things if I am surrounded, etc while walking the dog?

The area is outside Vancouver city limits near Costco on Andersen.

If confronted by a coyote, and I have a safe clear shot, is it legal?

Only if you can convince the cops you were in fear of being killed by it...

If it were me it would be but as I've understood it, it's not a legal shoot unless you or your human family members are in danger of fatal bodily harm.


People have recommended mace if that's your thing and it eleminates backstop issues

The conflicting issue may be whether you are in a suburban area where shooting is altogether prohibited.
