Like some others, my EDC choice has changed several times in the last few years. With all the new offerings that keep popping up I assume I'm not the only one to switch things out....

I started with the super duper subcompact mouse guns. I got it stuck in my head that concealability was THE MOST important thing to EDC. The problem is that these tiny little subcompacts just plain suck to shoot. And I think that one's EDC should be the gun they shoot not necessarily the most, but AT LEAST as often as others. So I bounced around, tried the LCP's, the G42/3's and a few others looking for the ultimate in concealability. The problem was every time I went to the range I found myself not shooting it. I didn't enjoy the tiny size, the snappy recoil and honestly I'm not super great with them accuracy wise.

After a few trial and error type experiences, I ended up with a Glock 26. It concealed OK, shot OK and I carried it for a few years. But it still wasn't my favorite and it was chunky so I wasn't exactly getting the "ultimate concealability" that I was longing for. I just kept telling myself that even though I didn't shoot it much, it was better than a knife or a beer bottle so I was good.

Then I met a few cool dudes from NWFA and realized that it IS possible to conceal a larger firearm quite easily so I moved up to a G19. I absolutely HATED carrying it. For about a week. Then I got used to it and then I forgot it was on me most of the time. 15 rounds, a grip I could actually hang on to and a gun I can shoot. I thought my quest was over. But my OCD and laziness kicked in and I realized that I didn't like having a pile of G17 mags for my other guns and 3 G19 mags for my EDC. Going to the range meant I had to make sure I brought the appropriate mags for my carry as well as all my other Glocks. Yes, I know that G17 mags work in a 19 but it doesn't equate to real-world situations since I never carried it like that. Also, the 19 mags don't work in larger framed guns so that kinda got to me.

Soooo......I rehomed the G19 and picked up a G45. Yes, it was a Glock I kinda poked fun at when it first released. I like to stir the pot around here, it keeps things interesting. Even when it comes to Glocks. So yeah, I wasn't too kind. :D

But it checks the boxes. G19 size slide, uses my existing holster, feels good in the hand and uses G17 mags just like all my other 9mm Glocks. The extra 1/2" or so of grip length doesn't make it conceal any worse and gives it the familiarity of my other Glocks so shooting it will be second nature.

My point here? Tiny subcompacts have their place. But if you hate shooting it, or don't shoot it often/well then you probably aren't going to be good when it absolutely counts. An occasional print isn't a big deal and 99% of the general public isn't going to notice anyway. I think some of us get so wrapped up in worrying about printing that we lose sight of the fact that our EDC's need to be an extension of our bodies and smaller isn't necessarily better. :s0140:

I go between my G26 & G19 mainly depending on what I'm doing that day. The G45 is intriguing if only to have a couple more rounds on tap...Have you had a chance to shoot it yet? Impressions?

I haven't shot it yet. I'll report back when I do (should be this weekend). But my initial impression is it feels EXACTLY like a G17/34 which is kind of obvious :D.

And that's another point. I shoot my 17 and 34 the most and I'm also the most accurate with them so EDCing such a similar platform makes sense to me. :)

Kind of surprised you didn't give the 48 a whirl? but then again, mags. The G43X or G48 with the Shield Arms mags is going to be the tits, when they finally hit retail release. The mags that James from TFB's YouTube tested look to be good to go - he abused them far more than most of us would and they kept running, and they didn't explode when he dropped them, or kicked them across the range deck. 15+1 in a slim trim gun is pretty damn appealing.

Now I'm waiting for when you switch up to the G34, because the extra inch of barrel will help distract folks from the lower bulge and you get more thrust per squeeze :p A G34 with an RMR is in your future...

Nah, my 34 won't make it to the rotation. I don't want anything to distract from my natural bulge......:s0140:

And yeah, the 48 doesn't offer anything that appeals to me. Less rounds, same size as a 19 but a little thinner. Nope, I'm good with 18 rounds and a gun that handles just like others I shoot damn well. :)

I have carried the same pistol for as long as I can remember it has just become second nature!! Maybe I need to switch things up:confused:

IIRC your EDC isn't a subcompact and I know you shoot it well so if it works no need to switch! I foolishly wasted a lot of time and money worrying about something that need not be worried about so much (printing).

I switched years ago when I scared the crap out of a little old lady loading out some flooring. I have been carrying a sub for two years now. I need to find a happy medium.

Hmmm, maybe a different holster or position? With your size, you should be able to EDC a howitzer wearing shorts and a t-shirt. :D

G19 in the cooler months and a Kahr MK9 in the warmer months has been my go to edc battery for years. I doubt I ever change and I shoot either one well enough. However, my newest glockish 19 with 1911 grip angle, apex trigger and trijicon hd xr night sights, I shoot a fair amount better. Might put it in the rotation after I get another 500rds through it without any trouble. To me the major advantage of the g17 over the g19 is the sight radius not capacity, so I will probably stick with the 19 as it works good for me and I own several already. If the g45 works for you rock on ! I am looking forward to a range report.

It's always good to get that comfy spot after a bunch of try's with other things.

I'm always trying different things.

Then I fall right back into the most comfortable to carry. So I gave up trying others.

I guess my point was that choosing an EDC doesn't need to be all about size. I think shootability should be number one. Adjust position, holster or clothing as needed.

I've bounced around as well, mouse guns, sub-compacts, full size and have currently settled on a Sig M11-A1 which is similar in size to a G19. Easily carried at 3:00, it's become my edc. I agree, it's about what one is comfortable and competent with. This is a factor many miss for the latest gee whiz carry gun. Carry what you shoot well, have confidence in and is comfortable to carry everyday, everywhere...

Holster choice and belt make a yuge difference in conceal-ability and comfort of carry. I highly recommend spending the time and effort to perfect the carry gear as well...

The capacity of some newer pistols on the market is interesting. Some 9mm single stacked sized compacts like the Taurus G2 or the Sig 365 hold between 10-12 rounds if I recall correctly. I was just about to purchase the Taurus but hated the trigger. I made two recent purchases of a Walther PPS & XD9 subcompact. Haven't got a chance to shoot either.

I have found the means of carrying makes all the difference. Larger guns I carry OWB holsters. I lose nothing in concealability but it seems weight distribution and a gun not poking you everywhere makes all day carrying tolerable. For EDC I mainly stick with a 9mm single stack. My wife is trying to get me into hiking so I recently got a fanny pack:eek: to try. It has a soft holster built inside.

A fanny pack? Yeah.....NO.
