The trick with Hometown Buffet is go 5 minutes before they switch from lunch to dinner...
....pay for lunch, stay for an early dinner (mostly neat, clean, polite old folks).

cheaper, less kids, more time to go for a walk afterwards.
(easier to out-run them for the last shrimp?) :s0155:

The only way, I did it at Hometown/Old Country. At John's Incredible Pizza on the other hand, I wanted to be first in at opening, before the crowds showed up. The popcorn and butterflied shrimp cried when they saw me coming.

Hey, come on up to the Couve. We have a Golden Corral running their full tilt buffet.;) Great salad bar and great fried chicken.

My first wife preferred Sweet Tomatoes. I guess she felt it was a little more socially acceptable to tell her friends she ate there. I went but I was always saying where's the meat? You mean I gotta pay extra for a little cup of meat. That is one buffet I don't miss.

Was in Camas yesterday and out of curiosity stopped by Golden Corral on the way home.

Felt like I was on the Jerry Springer show with the food stamp crowd. The food tasted like it was reheated right off the Sysco truck.

So nothing has changed since the early 90's when i last ate at one of those slop holes.

Possibly just a victim of the times. Hard to maintain the price point for its customers as unskilled labor demands 20 bucks per hour plus insurance, dishwasher for instance. Food has gotten expensive. And how to control the theft? Not by calling the police.....when I was a kid, my folks liked to frequent King's Table in St. Johns in N. Portland. Their entertainment while eating there was watching all the big ladies come in with their giant purses, that were empty. It was almost like a race for them when a new pan of fried chicken came out. Get in line, whole plate piled with fried chicken, get back to the table, and dump it in the purse. Like clockwork. Employees saw it, but even back then, wouldn't dare say a word, just bring out another pan.
There's a throwback. Funny timing, since I was reminiscing about King's Table and North's Chuck Wagon the other day. I wonder when they went defunct.

I never knew there was this much hate for these places. Its been multiple years since I ate at one since they have been gone a while. I know LONG after it got to where I could no longer stand fast food I still enjoyed these things. As I got older I often felt I was not getting as much "value" as I did not eat nearly as much. Still thought the food was fine for the price. When I was young and in good shape? Hell I probably made them lose money on me. I would go to one after a day at hard work and put down twice as much as I could now. To me is was FAR and away better than the fast food huts.

This thread is a mix of nostalgia and depression. The latter realizing I'm as old as a lot of you.
Nostalgia, depression and disdain.

I was surprised to see how many buffet haters there are here. I went out to bfast with wife this morning for our anniversary and it was $40 with tip. This was not a fancy place (black bear diner). I felt like I was ripped off but I am dieting so a buffet would not have been a wise choice calorie wise.

I am guessing there are a lot more affluent members here than I would have expected. This makes sense when you see the contempt displayed for low budget firearm brands.

I kind of feel like, as a poor, that I am fortunate to be able to hobnob with the upper class here.

Sounds about right. I have noticed all my go to foods at diners and restaraunts are up about 30%. Not talking the fancy places. 4 of us go out for a meal, I just expect it to be around 100 bucks. Funny thing is, lines are as long as ever.

You can grill up an amazing burger or piece of chicken or fish for probably less than you'd pay at a buffet. Having disdain for low quality food isn't elitist or snobby.

real Bar/Tavern/pub burgers and fries tend to be really danged good compared to the fast food places, even though they now cost near the same anyhow  cheaper than the likes of Red Robin, Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays. Food trucks can offer good stuff, most are basically the same equipment that used to be a staple of the railcar shaped diners of the 50s-70s you know? So go in expecting diner style food and get good stuff from food trucks, go in expecting gourmet stuff from "gourmet burger places" and get crap. Buffets... used to like Hometown/Old country and Izzys but quality of food has noticably gone down along with service. Asian buffets amazingly still in business, can't really complain, wife likes their food.

Edit. there is one buffet that my wife's family consistently likes. Its at Spirit Mountain Casino and it is spendy but last few times, had pretty good food.
