I'm making a couple targets and I'm working with 1/2" thick steel. Rifle or pistol, what calibers am i ok to shoot at it and maintain some life? I won't be shooting anything bigger than a .45acp for pistol calibers, but what about the rifles? (7.62x39, 8mm?). Thanks for any help.

Justin

Pistols will be just fine, but most centerfire rifles will go right through 1/2" mild steel at 100yds or less (or severely damage it). They will greatly damage the steel beyond that for quite a ways.

Assuming you're talking about mild steel as you didn't mention AR500 or anything like that.
