Things you do not think will affect you can change very quickly. The Beachie fire appears to have engulfed the Santiam Canyon along Hwy 22 overnight. Idanaha, Detroit, Mill City, Gates and Lions all evacuated. We live about 20 miles west of there and the below photos show outside our home at 0900 this morning, it is completely dark outside. The smoke is so thick it is not a good idea to be outside. Ash is falling and covering everything. All this changed in just a matter of hours. The cities of Stayton and Sublimity are now on a level 2 evacuation notice. That is only 8 miles from us .

It appears to be more than twice the size of the Lionshead fire on this map but is still showing about 500acre size. Last night it was looking much smaller than the Lionshead Fire and was showing 500acres in size.

Salem Airport is socked in completely, IFR special instructions only, and non essential flights are to divert to Aurora if possible! Lots of firefighting aircraft using Salem Ncnary for fuel and water/retardant!

Air Quality just went to the worst level here @salem McNary airfield!
Must be the Highway 22 area fire(s) as everything else is to the east of us, and the winds are blowing up from the south @016 to 023 heading!

Judging from the map this fire must be 1000s of acres. Something doesn't jive here.

There is 640 acres in one square mile and they are issuing Level 2 evacuation orders for Silverton?

I was looking at the map below. The fire area outline has been greatly expanded from last night but they haven't provided info updates other than expanded evacuation notices.

Interesting.. Our shop is right near KSLE.. I saw a large Sikorsky helicopter a couple of hours ago (I believe it was an S-61). Where there any larger aircraft, like Electras, Neptunes, or DC-4/DC-6?
