When I was young, the old-timers believed that 30-40 was an excellent deer gun at ranges beyond the range of 30-30. Then the 30-06 became the hot item, but it is louder, kicks more, and is too powerful for short range.

My dad used a sporterized Krag for a deer rifle. Lyman peep sight and 150 grain Silvertips. Always filled his tag. I shot my first deer with that gun.
 
Shotgun ammo is still hard to find and when you do find it, it is still pricey. Have not had to look for rifle or pistol ammo since I made sure I had enough after the Obama years. I won't need it for years.
