Several years back I got a VHS tape (told you it was a while ago) from the NRA. Later I got a bill for it. I was steamed. Called them up and told them that if they ever sent me any unsolicited materials again I'd cancel my membership. Now all I get is the junk mail which I drop in the trash on the way into the house.

I'm one of those that asked that my communication with them be electronic. I get occasional mailings, but most of what I get is via email. It makes it very easy to check quickly for content or ignore altogether. I went into membership knowing this would be the case, it's really no big deal for me. If they ever decide to send me an unsolicited product with a bill, I'll thank them for the 'gift' and go about my day. I would love it if they didn't do mass mailings, etc., but the fact is that they make money they need to keep up their efforts. If they weren't getting members to actually buy this stuff, they'd drop the mass mailings in a heartbeat. But people are obviously responding, because they keep doing it. If you can find a way to get 5,000,000 people to ignore everything they send, then it will stop, until then, either opt out or ignore it. Seems like a small price to pay to be part of the strongest pro 2A group in the country.

The last of these that I received wasn't directly associated with the NRA but probably one of their "partners" (ie bought access to the NRA mail list). I just ignored it. If you look closely at all the fine print it probably states that no payment is required.

Here's the postal service link: https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/...fraudschemes/othertypes/unsolicitedfraud.aspx

Seems some companies forget that they cannot follow up with a bill or demand for payment. That's when you can write back and put the fear of the DoJ into them.

They don't fear - they just then take you off their list.

What puts fear into them is if you pass it on to the FTC or USPS or whomever and if the authorities get enough complaints then they follow up on it. Even then, they probably shut down that corporation and startup again under a new name. This is how scam artists work.

I did not know the NRA "farmed" stuff like this out. (Thank you for letting us know, and it's nice to know our dues aren't being used for this crap.) Even though I've never bought anything offered by the NRA (or anyone else) I really don't have a problem with that because it helps to keep our membership rates lower than they'd be if they didn't do outside fund raising. That is except for this DVD fiasco.

It certainly gave me the impression it was on me if I did not send it back, and I shouldn't need a legal degree to figure it out. Maybe I'd be on the hook for it or maybe not. I honestly don't know, but either way I'm sure disappointed in the NRA. If they didn't know of these "tactics" they should have and then shut it down. I mean these are the kind of tactics low budget porno sites use.

I'm not ready to give up my membership but I'm certainly going to call them and express my displeasure. I may even point them to this thread because I can't believe I'm the only one who feels like this.

Exactly. Whether they actually sent it themselves is irrelevant. This type of scheme is underhanded at best and they should be ashamed to be associated with it, but apparently they are not.

You can always join the 2nd Amendment Foundation. They are based in Bellevue Washington. They may be smaller than the NRA, but they fight for our rights just as hard, if not harder.

I let my NRA membership lapse, and I still the the endless stream of mail.........Including a DVD, which I just set aside and pretty much forgot about.

Just sayin.................

I've never received any junk mail from them.

That's what happens when you use a telephone pole for a street address. Everybody else gets a flurry of it, USPS, email and if foolish enough to give hem your phone number, they'll be there, too.

I support and am a member, but the plague of solicitations is appalling. It's like donating to a homeless shelter or something, they pester you to near death to make sure you regret your mistake of kind generosity.

<snerk> I found them to be way worse with junk mail and SPAM, and they have no way for you to opt out. I had to have them remove all of my information from their database. Wasn't easy to get them to do it either.

How does a gun rights organization have so much trouble with the concept of "Leave me alone"?

they played the same game on me last year when I became a new member, when a bunch of free signup crap arrived so did the Tactical Training CD's .......I tossed them, I didnt even open it to see if I owed someone for this item ...I did not order it....I didnt care ...I felt it was just one more NRA sign up freebie.....sneaky how they send the CD's the same time as your free sign up crap arrives

when then the bills started coming in the mail for the Tactical Training CD's, I told them I had thrown them out & cant return them , they said I owed for them because I accepted them
I finally told them I didnt ask for them Im not paying for them and what a great job they had done in convincing me not to continue my NRA membership....if NRA or affiliates scam that hard for cash I dont trust you .

I dont care if its actually NRA or not THEY ARE AWARE OF THE SCAM perpetrated by another company

NRA only stopped working me for membership renewal this past month....finally gave up..........way to make me feel comfortable NRA!!!

Yeah I didn't re-up my membership because of stuff like this. They just use none stop scare tactics to drum up every dime they can get. And then try to say that gun laws failed because they fought for me. BS.

you cannot be forced to pay for something you never ordered.

keep the dvd if you want. or destroy it if you want. your choice.

you are under no legal requirement to pay for it or return it.

I don't get this kind of stuff from them anymore either, but I had to get downright rude to them on the phone a couple times to stop it. I wish I had known about the opt-out thing sooner.

The fact is, the NRA is the big dog when it comes to gun rights. If it weren't for the NRA, we would almost certainly have UK or Australian type laws on the books here, or at least Canadian. The are far from perfect, but they are effective. Completely dumping the NRA would be a huge mistake. Dropping your membership is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

That said, how much more effective could they be if they put a stop to bogus fund raising garbage like this? I read over and over about people who are alienated by their incessant phone calls and junk mail. I have numerous friends and family who support gun rights and joined the NRA at some point or another, but quit because of this stuff, and will never consider joining again. Too bad.

Sure, you and I know (now) that we can opt out of the deluge of junk from them, but the average person who decides to join out of support for the Second Amendment typically does not. They get inundated, ticked off, and quit. I fault that on some NRA bean counter who sees an extra buck "for the cause" in aggressive, questionable marketing. Do they even realize that it drives potential supporters away?

as long as it results in a net gain of money, they don't care what you think.

sadly, there are enough stupid people out there who fall for this crap, and shell out the $$. so the NRA has no motivation to stop.

the only way it will stop is if it starts becoming a net financial loss. or if it becomes a public embarassment / scandal for the NRA.

I got dvds from them. I read the material with them and it said I didn't have to return it or pay for it. As I recall it wasn't the first thing it said.

<- Why there aren't any school shootings in Israel!
Teacher with long gun slung over her shoulder!!!

Too bad there's so much dislike for the NRA, as a Lifetime, Benefactor level member and upgraded to Golden Eagle member I'm well aware that they take in money, but it's kept us from having our guns confiscated (so far)!!

I guess the left's "divide and conquer" is working!
