I just renewed mine, that's simple enough to do online. The original course was a full week
The NRA pistol instructor cert is normally a day and a half (12 hours). You also need to complete the NRA basic class before you take the instructor class. I let my old cert lapse a few years ago and had to do the full class again last year. Grand total of 3 very long days, but most places that we looked at do it in 4.

Well mine was for the government so I'm sure they added some extra bs.....we did rifle, pistol and shotgun in a very long 5 days. Then once a year I had to teach all 3 to our feild specialists

The rifle and shotgun modules/specialties are separate now, so that probably covers the difference. All very different from when I did my original cert back in the '90s.

Still have to do 1 class/year for each module to stay current. Kind of a PITA. My wife and I run 2 monthly programs (women's specific program and a new gun owner program). Neither one covers the class requirement, so we need to figure out how to squeeze in at least 2 more classes.
