Sandbag rest for shooting

I have the sandbags, now I need an opinion for an optimum filler. Is one grade of sand preferable? Will a lighter medium work? I filled plenty in VN, but that was for bunkers and we used whatever was available.

did ya bring back any of it.china beach,ban me thout,nha trang,bu dop etc etc...LOL I did.playground sand,river sand(free)it all works.the finer the better.I like using the lead shot bags.FWIW

Zircon "sand", which can be purchased from a number of suppliers is what benchrest competition shooters use. It's quite heavy, and packs up nicely.

Agreed finer and heavyer the better. Stay away from bags that are Vinal lined stick with plain leather. Vinal wont hold the rifle secure enough.

Bench rest guys use heavy expensive tripods and a smooth rear rest so the gun slides back smoothley.
