I recently picked up a Nylon 66 apache (chrome receiver cover and barrel) that has some minor rust spots. Any suggestions on cleaning and possibly removing this? Thanks
From the sounds of it you don't want to completely take them apart. I was just wanting to know of some products/techniques to remove the small rust spots.
The trigger assy is really complicated, and shouldn't be messed with.
As far as rust spots, any good penetrating oil should work.
Just soak the area overnight, and then use a soft cloth soaked in gun oil to rub on the rust spots.
I prefer Kroil over any other product, but it's hard to find locally.
It's available online from Kano Labs.
Kroil comes in a spray can and a 1/2 pint can with a drip nozzle tip.
I like the drip nozzle tip because you don't waste any more then needed.
It's an amazing product that lives up to it's claims.
Kroil is pretty good, but, it's an oil, almost any oil, including gun oil will help you here with the rust. That's why gun oil is used as a cleaner, it's more a penetration thing, it gets between the surface stuff and the surface.
Simple Green is essentially a rust accelerant. lol.
I've used various light oils and fine steel wool on rusty firearms to good effect.. takes the rust off but doesn't even really touch/harm the bluing. Also, for small areas, rubbing the end of a chopstick or somesuch (with oil) works pretty well.
Good luck.
