Do I need to to qualify what I hear, as well as lots of others? Real question. Numbers mean squat when you apply REAL WORLD applications. Don't try to instigate anything here, ears don't lie. I read numbers all day long but what a person can actually witness is what really matters. That's is all I really need to say about it, but to answer your question, no, I do not build suppressors.
Oh, well I do. A few I think I'm at 70 this year so far which is half decent for a one man shop and they are top tier. I know the topic somewhat well and I know the industry quite well. The problem with numbers is they do lie when they aren't very strictly gathered . Everyone can only hear the firing pin. I hear it all the time.

Not to mention there is published testing that readily supports you can get down to 111db with a suppressed 22lr and subsonic ammo (especially when using a long barreled bolt action).

That's really informative, really it is. My issue is that you are coming across the same as every other over educated being I have to interact with in life, the same ones who are so smart that they cannot see truth. I really do not want to derail this thread and get it shut down, so I'll leave the "bigger" person thing to you. We will get to see how big you can be. I agree, your experience in building these are far more than me, that is truly irrelevant when it comes to what I hear with "MY" ears though. My ears don't lie to me, numbers on paper, and much more importantly, other peoples opinions about what they "THINK" I hear lie far more. I cannot change my perception of hearing, nor can you or anyone else. So, please, don't continue arguing a point that will never make the mark.

I've done the same tests on that same gun with the same can (and others) and same ammo many times in the last few years. When I do real testing I use mil spec protocols and my impulse meter has a rise time of 25 microseconds which is faster than required by the spec. Those tests are always the same within +_1db as this (110-112 db).

Longer barrels and less powerful cartridges of course makes less blast as shown in the video above. Bolt action eliminates the noise from the action (which is often around 115 db). You could put any sort of regular sized suppressor on there and you will get roughly the same #s.

Your ears aren't lying to you. A properly calibrated impulse meter with a fast rise time will simply confirm what is obvious to anyone that has shot a suppressed long barreled .22 with a low powered cartridge (and probably even obvious to most without any suppressor too).

Please don't use yer big werds like that, I'm just a dum simpleton who doesn't know my body :(

The problem with your ears is that they incredibly subjective.Theyre connected to a very flawed computational device that hears what it wants to hear.My hearing sucks. Rock music, shooting, Howitzers, drag race engine building, osshore outboards etc. I FAIL hearing tests on worksites 100% of the time. Profound hearing loss they say. Put me 75 yards from one of these "I only hear the firing pin" shots and I'll recognize it as a muffled gunshot every time. I did a test with my dad once. My dad was close to stone deaf before he died. He came over and I went upstairs. I put a top quality commercial silencer rated highest in its class on a rilfe with subs and took one shot out the window into the back yard. I came dowstairs and he asked why I was shooting out the window.

Tests with even decent equipment can be set up to hear what they want to hear as well. Thats why stringent testing protocol exist. Temperature, huimiidity , elevation, placement of microphone, type of meter ( a suitable meter STARTS at 4 grand) etc . Its garbage in garbage out with dB testing of firearms. Theres really only 2 maybe 3 places that put out decent test results that I trust. Andrew King at Otter Creek Labs because his methodology is so strict. and Pew Science. Some people dont like Pew because of his pay for play system but its a business for him. His white papers are extraordinarily well and as an engineer I appreciate that. I'll throw in Joe Longo as well just because I respect what he's doing for the craft and his methodology and equipment are good.

I cant compare silencers using your ears.

Exactly my point, thank you for proving it yet again!

Like I said, I'm a simpleton and really don't care about the dorky stuff, I just want what sounds quiet. I'm uneducated and don't care too much about all the intellectual mumbo jumbo, if it sounds quiet, then it is quiet enough for me. I'm no operator, engineer, or anything special, I'm just a person with functional ears. Really dude, is it that important to be "right" here, what does it matter, I am just some random internet dude.

I pass every hearing test. Better than 95% of the population according to the last test.

Can I be a test subject? I made out the audio in the booth to the 2nd lowest level and could differentiate all of the voices in the 'crowded' room.

I'd be a fun candidate.

Anyway gents.. we should know and understand that everyone's hearing is like an audio spectrum. Some highs, lows and mids are muted just like cheap speakers.

Some people have 1970's paper speakers in an Yugo and some run Bose. Sure they make noise but how's the SQL…

Back to non-suggestive testing.

@kmk1012 we should go shoot the bubblegum when my Angstadt barrel arrives at the 'Licker in Salem… or run some homemade 22 cans for bubblegums and giggles. 'For science'

Dang it. I submitted one Feb 22. Was just going to forget about it for a while, then I saw your post. I hope that means I'm 3 weeks out for an approval.
Last one before that was December 1 that came back April 1.
If all things were equal, I'd say less. Like maybe May 12 or 13, but we're talking about the govt, so who knows.
