Hell, the M1Carbine was kicking azz and takin names long before the AR was any thing more then a wet dream! Don't make the mistake in thinking that cute little antique carbine is any less effective now days! Be the last mistake you make in this life!:D

In US Army Training films, they were penetrating Field Helmets at 100 yards.

Ask the men Audie Murphy took on with it... oh, wait, you can't, they're dead!

Worse yet, be ready and able to go into any place on earth at the sound of an alarm, and then not having the best maps of that area. Pre GPS, we had all kinds of fun with land nav, and even learned the tricks of using a Star Compass, as long as you can see the stars, your good. Boy did we have a lot of fun with nav!:D something I still practice today and enjoy!
Star compass ok WHO GOT TO CARRY THE SEXTANT .LOL THAT'S WHAT THERE CALLED I was just asking because there odd bulky and you really don't want to bend it lol or your going to miss your mark

I have been watching and thinking about this thread. I understand a lot of it is just sharing old war stories, and I am jealous I don't have any!

But if we are being serious, I think we might be missing the point. Or maybe I am.

The way I see it, IRONS are essential, every rifle should have them, and every rifleman should be proficient with them at CQB and at least a few hundred yards. HOWEVER, optics (RDS) are objectively faster at CQB, and optics (scope) is objectively more accurate at long range. It doesn't matter if you are "good enough" with irons (how big was that qual target at 400 yards?) But if you could be better with an optic.

I agree optics fail, and I think they should be mounted on a QD mount so they can be removed.

I also think that trying to set up a rifle to do everything all at once is silly. Good QD mounts return to zero, and allow you to configure the rifle to mission specific needs (RDS+flashlight vs. Optic + bipod) in less than a minute. The only thing that is married to the gun is irons and sling!

I have 0 tactical experience. I haven't even been shooting rifles that long, in just try to do a lot of research and think about stuff a lot.

Thoughts?

Yep you can put everything on one gun but why you don't even need Quick Detatch optics they make 45 degree iron sights if you're optic breaks or QUIT working you just turn your RIFLE 45 degrees and you have iron sights IMG_20180417_074457.jpg IMG_20180417_074601.jpg IMG_20180417_074508.jpg

I think if you shoot right handed, 45' angle sight would be easier to use on the right side. Not sure how that works, because I only like using them in CoD... ;)

The point of this thread is to convince me to get a carry handle on my AR, or build one that way...

Yep that's true but that's my gun and I shoot lefty HEHEE

Depends on use, if it's a bump in the night gun it needs to have a light. And as others have pointed out a red dot is also a good idea and doesn't add a ton of weight.

I think you are right on the mark! 1. Be proficient with irons and your basic configuration 2 Add Accessories as needed (red dots, lights bi pod). 3 If you dont need it for a particular mission then dont mount it. Bayonets look cool but i wouldn't slap one on to do entry work

Check out the DI Optical FC1 prism. Lightweight, low-profile, and especially good for bad eyes, it's basically the sight the ROK Army uses but tweaked *just* enough that they can legally export it.

Good point, however couple of reasons I am not a huge fan on offset irons on a combat gun. (Great for hunting though!)

1. I want to me able to operate my gun ambidextrously. Like you pointed out below, they are really hand specific.

2. Other than for shooting over cover or flat-prone, the offsets are less natural than vertical.

3. My basic idea is that I want 1 do-all gun (because my direct thread suppresor is loctited on) that isn't cluttered with stuff. 95% of the time my gun is pulling HD. I don't want to have a big useless scope obstructing my vision. I tried a variable 1-4x and am not a big fan.

4. I want to be able to shave weight and bulk if I take it backpacking. Like I said, I am pretty good with irons, so I can rip the optics off and procede with a lighter gun.

Seen a lot of fellows with really decked out Ar 15s Quad rails with red dots, flashlights, lasers and a bunch of little gadgets (BAD levers oversized controls). Kinda takes away the main benefit of having a Ar 15, If im gonna pack around a 9 pound rifle its gonna be of the 7.62 variety. Its not that i have never used or dont see the benefit of such devices but having carried one around in full gear in the streets of Fallujah you learn to add devices to fit the mission. The big 3 would be 1. a clean and well lubed rifle 2. plenty of mags and ammo 3. A bottle of CLP ( An AR15 without CLP becomes worthless after 500 rounds or so) when you feel your rifle slow down just squirt a couple shots of CLP on the bolt and she will run like new repeat as needed. I add the least amount of weight to my rifle as possible a light for night missions and maybe a rmr type sight for close quarters outside of that i like her naked. Thoughts?View attachment 449521
21 tango, I feel the same way, I`m thinking about getting a AR while there still legal just because I carried an M-4 in Iraq also, and know how to do any and everything with it manuever wise. However, I just cannot see myself cleaning one to the standards I'm use too, without having to remove any accessories and then having to re-boresight/zero the thing after reattaching accessories..

I agree. The AR-15 platform is (generally) "mission ready" right out of the box. When I worked in Security I learned the old "red dome light in the cruiser" trick while on the street.

I can still roll out of the rack and use an AR-15, M1 Carbine, or Remington 870 without bothering to use an artificial light source. The element of surprise is your friend. I don't mind making a kill in low-light conditions. It instantly takes out an enemy and scares the bejeezus out of an accomplice.
