Because when we go shooting as civilians we typically aren't doing it to maximize our chances at a successful mission, eliminating others, and maximizing our survival capabilities.

We're doing it to have fun.

And various crazy optics, grips, lights, lasers, and other gizmos are fun.

We're not marching around Iraq in 110 degree heat with 80 pounds of gear and armor and being shot at and having bombs go off near us where that extra 3-4 pounds on a rifle is going to kill us.
"Mission essential" implies war/combat.

I agree that I PREFER plain Jane rifles, but I find that I want a suppresor for the advantages they provide. I need a light to ID my target for HD, since I am a civilian, and I shoot better using a short VFG as a AFG to pull the gun into my shoulder.

You need a sling. You need BUIS if you are going to run an optic. I don't feel the NEED for an optic, but I will probably run one on a QD base.

I agree rifles/uppers should be tailored to specific tasks though.

Lastly, you should use better grease/clp, or tune the gun better if it NEEDs lube every 500rds, and my understanding of running a gun in the desert is you should be using dry-lube?
No Clp works fine. We dont use dry lube. and you use it as needed. Running your weapon on the range semi auto requires less care than going full tilt in combat .

I all my years, I never found a need for the various accessories carried now days, a good quick and easy optic was about the only thing that really earned a place, and then only when mounted on a carry handle, not on A flat top with BUIS, as they were always in the way! I always took off the rear BUIS and carried it in my vest pocket when we switched to the M-4. I guess I could argue the targeting designator was handy once or three times, but generally a PIA all the other times! Co-witness sights sucked, really messed with your vision, especially with a doubler or a 4X! And if we were doing night ops, the whole thing had to change, ether we ran N.O.D. ( my preferd tool) or we ran a starlite optic on a M-4! The problem was with N.O.D. you needed ether a grit sight, a red dot or holo sight that was compatible, and that could become a PIA!

Pic from the day I finished building it. Built it 100% from stripped/individual parts. Both upper and lower. last count was over 16 different brands of parts in that gun and almost every single part bought on sale.

Suppose the haters will hate mine for the quad rail. The rails serve their purpose though. For the range I have a quick detach Atlas bipod that clicks and locks onto the front of the bottom rail to make prone or bench shooting more stable.

Ring the gongs at 200yds with the magpul flip up sights that are on it now. I also have an EOTech 556 that I've used on it, but took off it recently to shoot with just "iron" (plastic) sights to test their accuracy and sight in if necessary.

Been contemplating a 1-4 or 1-6x scope for seeing my target better at range....I'm not getting any younger and neither are my eyes.

Really been thinkin' about getting rid of that CTR stock for something with a longer/wider rake. That bloody CTR stock plucks whiskers off my face every time I shoot it unless I put my non trigger hand across the front of the stock to keep my whiskers out of the tube/stock area. Suppose I could try the thicker butt pad for the CTR to get my cheek further back on the stock so its not biting whiskers off on the front of it. Otherwise I might just have to break down and replace the whole buffer assembly and stock for a rifle buffer assembly/stock.

LOL!! You have to shave before you shoot? That just dont seem right!

I am not sure on the real difference between 400 rpm semi auto and 600 rpm full auto.

When I shoot, I shoot a lot and my guns do get smoking hot.

I use a good grease, and can't remember the last time I had a jam.

I think I have come full circle and appreciate a light, simple AR . It doesn't mean a 9lb plus AR with a 1-4x scope or larger and a quadrail , grip pod, light, laser and buis isn't of great value. But it's hard to beat the durability of the carry handle sights and A frame front sight. And a little over 6 lbs empty if I remember correctly with a pencil barrel.

I like them all rifle length, mid length, carbine, the classic looks of the a2 but the flattop versatility of the a3. But I don't want unnecesary weight. Pounds = pain.

For playing around or target shooting the rifle length, 20" match Hbar , i had was a super soft shooter. Almost zero recoil or movement. But a bit heavy. Variety is the spice of AR life.

Adjustable gas system supposedly helps in the recoil department too...maybe one of these days i'll actually adjust mine :D

Had the thing for 4 years and never once bothered to adjust the gas block. Guess I figured it cycles everything I've ever put through it 100%...F-it. lol

Since I have ZERO need for a .223/5.56mm (I'm just NOT into shooting Poodles) in any platform, well, my AR is a real "10" and for me the .308/7.62 x 51mm is the REAL answer.:):):)

Carrying handles seem pretty fancy to me, sort of a luxury item really.

I'm tempted to dip my front sight post in some glory plastic crap I bought for jigs after reading all the praise.

I want a red dot sight, but I have this A2 gas block that gets in the way... I would get a carrying handle, but feel like I should just start a build with an upper that already has a carrying handle built in...

Totally need to find that glowy jig paint.

I dont use grease on an m4 but if it works for you cool. CLP has always worked for me. And yes their is a huge difference in semi and full auto
