What is a carbine anyhow? :s0153:

A long gun, with an abbreviated or shorter barrel than it's rifle version?
Like the 94 Winchester, and M-4?

Or just a short handy rifle? Something like the M1 Carbine?
It has no long barrel version.

What say you?

It varies. The SKS is a carbine despite having a 20" barrel, and I don't recall a rifle in 7.62x39 that had a longer barrel.

The Yugo mausers with around 19" barrels are carbines because the full length mausers had longer barrels.

On the other hand... A 20" barrel or shorter is considered a carbine.

Rifles like the AKs don't get called carbines despite meeting the length (or lack thereof) requirement to be one. o_O

Just playing Devils advocate here.

Is the AK-47 almost always referred to as a rifle? And it's just little guy!;)
Pretty much yes. Its almost never considered a carbine despite meeting the requirement.

I just call it one cause its shorter than the SKS, which is a carbine. o_O

I think the language needs some work.

Careful, been is usually pronounced bin. You don't want car-bin to start being how folk pronounce it do ya? :D

So any volunteers to rewrite the dictionary so we know what a carbine really is? ;)
