Maybe they are recovered stolen firearms...?
To a thief...a gun is a gun...can he use it or make a profit with it...is all that he cares about.
When I talk about making a profit...even $50 is a profit for a high value or collector gun...since the thief stole it in the first place.

Or maybe a family firearm...that no one wants to inherit ...so they get turned in to the police..?

Possible if they were never reported or reported improperly. If a serial number isn't included in a police report, the gun isn't going home even if it eventually gets recovered. I've known this to happen. Strictly hunter types sometimes don't record serial numbers.

Which reminds me of something else re. stolen firearms, but I'll put it in another post.
