Having been in a similar situation (although not violent) I certainly understand what the homeowner was dealing with mentally and psychologically however his hesitation was excessive and he was completely justified to act much quicker.

Damn shot him twice and Cops still had to fight to arrest him.
Yep, they should have been loading this POS into a trash bag for the burn barrel!

"Deputies say the homeowner warned the intruder before shooting him. Investigators say the homeowner then left the basement and took up a position to protect his family on the second floor at the staircase. There, he took his stand as the subject made his way up to the second floor."

His family was in the house and he left a wounded animal who is armed with the ability to follow him upstairs where his family was. He should have ended it back in the basement with as many shots as necessary to END the threat.

Sad that the OP article misstated 'a popular maxim in the gun community as: "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away." ONLY??

Although the police were reportedly nearby in this one particular case, the author's gratuitous addition of the word "only" changes the whole sense of that truism.
