Linn county has higher rates of folks on public assistance than Benton or Lane county. Take % on food stamps: Linn 25.9% vs. Benton 11.7% or Lane 22.8%. More folks are on food stamps in Linn than Multnomah 22.5%.

The "city people on welfare" thing is off. The more rural the area, the higher amount of folks on public assistance. And no shame in it. Fewer jobs and harder to get by. Complain about folks on the public dole and you're likely criticizing neighbors.
When you look at how many people live in Multnomah county vs. all of those counties combined, you might realize that only mentioning percentages and not overall costs is a bit disingenuous.
