Wow I just figured out what a "troll" is, now I have to google "prog", too :)

I do have a license to carry a concealed handgun, BTW. I've had it for years, I believe almost 20. Although I let it expire a couple times, when I wasn't into shooting sports very much. I currently carry a license for the simple reason that I have much less chance to be hassled by law enforcement while exercising my right to own a firearm. Seems keeping one in a bag or a pocket is a big no no without the license.

Thank you all for taking the time to voice your ideas and opinions. I have read every one of them. There are some very valid points, and some very intelligent people on this forum. I appreciate the articulation of thoughts here.
I really didn't ask the question to argue individual ideas, more to understand the answer to the original question. I didn't ask it to judge anyone's opinions.
So what I hear you saying is that I should have said "I'll be haunting her genderless bathroom" Or would Zir have been more genuflecting to your narcissistic ego ?o_O

just a few points from my own opinion.
  • The rest of the guns... that's just because most on a gun forum just simply like guns and want to talk about them or own different ones for hobbyist interests. Its true, you only really need one to defend yourself and it almost really doesn't matter what kind.

It matters very much what kind. Every situation calls for a different tool. We have the God given right to defend ourselves and to bear arms to do so, so why wouldn't you have the correct tools for the situations you find yourself in?

The full size pistol with a mounted light you keep by your bed is perfect for anything that may come calling as you sleep, but may not carry as well as the j-frame you put in your pocket on a hot summer day. That same snubnose might leave you wanting in the woods where you might benefit from more power and penetration that you'd find in a big bore revolver. When you get back home, you revert back to the full size semi-auto that doesn't present the same level of danger of retained energy upon exit of a wall in your home.

It goes full circle. Having one gun is like playing golf with one club. If you want to talk niches, look at the field of rifle and cartridge combos available to hunters. Unlike your average person who carries but will never be forced to kill, hunters do kill and you'll find their tools to be much more tailored to the task.

"Prog" may be tougher to find. Pretty sure he means Progressive. We get trolled from time to time and it can get under people's skin. If you stick around it will become clear from your posts where you stand and folks will treat you well. You're missing some of the more obvious troll signs, so I'm going to lay off. For now. :D

Actually "Prog" has been in common use for over 50 years, in England, the home of Fabian Socialism (Progressivism). The term is, of course, suppressed, but near as much as Shariaism is which has usurped all Liberal/Progressive/Collectivist movements. WHY? Because Sharia surpasses all Left Wing aspirations of world dominance!

Not trying to stir the pot here. But why is it that so many gun owners talk about personal defense situations with a given firearm? In my 40 years on this planet, I've never been in a situation where a firearm would even have been a consideration to use against another human being. I realize most media outlets sell fear, and a great majority of the weapons that people carry and own are for person assault of sorts. But I'm not at war, nor are they. And my wallet or $3000 car is not worth taking a life over, no matter what kind of scum the perp may be. Hell, legal fees would be much more substantial for the use of deadly force to protect anything I own than the item itself is worth.
I understand then the last thing (IMO) to protect is my person. Or those that I care for. But when? Where? Why? These things just don't happen. Am I really that lucky? That a situation that would truly justify killing another human being has never happened to me, or anyone I have ever talked to? It seems the majority of violent crime happens to those who are involved in that level of crime itself.
Why do so many gun owners invest so much thought and practice into the idea that they may have to someday "defend themselves"? I know this idea I spin will set off lots of fire on this forum. But it's just a discussion, an opinion I am curious about.
I am a gun owner, by the way. Yes, I have a CCP. Lots of "black guns" in my safe.
They are fun to shoot.

If I have to explain it to you, you still would not understand it...

I hope the OP has finally figured it out. We the people will not give up ANY THING with out a fight! Life is a very sacred gift, and it doesn't last very long, Why make it easy for others to take it from you? Why??? Why do nothing to protect that which matters most!!!

And a hero to many!
"Every assault against our bastion, every bombard against our walls strengthens our resolve as if the flux was poured from our collective cauldron to leave only the purer ore behind!"
Man I hate that "Collective Bleep!" Marvin would never have said it, not for a million dollars! I guess that's why he went to France and made 2 movies that were somewhat anti-bankist (bankest?)

More thoughts...

"Scared People" don't train almost every weekend or at least one or twice a week.

"Scared people" have them in locked cabinets because of the allusion of security.

I have a gun, why would I be scared?

TBH, there are a few things going on here. First, some people like to think through a situation, and through repetition determine their course of action. Second, some people just like to talk about this, yea, it's maybe a bit more macabre then talking about the weather, but usually it's gun people, talking about guns, on a gun website, or something related.

I've used my gun in defense (of someone else actually), didn't have to fire a shot. Some people had gotten into a road rage incident, had dragged a dude out of his car and were beating the bejesus out of the guy. I don't know if maybe he started it, but I stopped, told the guys to take a hike, which they were not too happy about, pulled out my gun when they started walking my way. TBH, it wasn't a particularly fun experience, when a min or so later, the police responded to my 911 call, and I was giving the guy (who got beat up) some medical aid, and the police decided I was the threat. (gun in waistband hands full of bandages srslywtf).

One of the big things when it comes to defense, sure you may not be willing to shoot someone over a car, the money in your wallet, etc. But when you come across someone who is willing to use violence, or the threat of violence death is always one possible outcome. The person robbing me thinks that my car, the money in my wallet, is more valuable than my life. It's really not a simple philosophical equation.

My life is valuable to me, it's valuable to my family, my family's lives are valuable to me. If someone forces me to make a choice that involves weighing the value of me and mine against a person willing to do us harm, that's not that difficult a choice in simple terms. Can I de-escalate the situation? Does the perp run at the sight of the gun? Does he run at the first sign of resistance? Am I going to chase the guy down if he runs away? Hell no, he just realized that his life was more valuable than anything I had.

I am willing to give the OP the benefit of doubt regarding being a troll.
After reading his replies , he stated that the word scared was a bad choice.
This is not usual troll behavior.

On the other hand scared might not be as bad a word choice as first thought.
A lot of anti gun media describes gun owners as being afraid of something.
Hell even some pro gun memes that I have seen can come across as if gun owners are afraid.
The use of violent or "scary" images to sell a self-defense technique is also fairly common.
I can see why when one sees these ads or memes etc ... That some people might chose the word scared.
Especially when both sides of a issue use fear to sell their idea or product.

I do not feel scared right now as I type this over coffee.
However if I hear a strange noise at 3.00 a.m. and think someone broke into my house, I could be.
The important thing here , is not to let your fear drive your decision making.
Having a gun and the knowledge along with the skill to use it , will give me more options to get out of this situation.
This in turn helps me control my situation.
I have been scared before many times in my life , I'm sure I will be again.
I also know that I have the ability and willingness to do what is necessary to get thru what is troubling me at a given moment.
As it has been stated many times over it is good to be prepared for many of lifes different problems.

I asked the wrong question. I should not have used the word "scared", as that is a combative term in itself.
The thought behind the question was my amazement of how much energy and passion go into the idea that a person should need to protect himself or those around them. It seems more than "just a tool" when so much effort is put into protecting themselves. And so much passion! It almost seems like it gives identity of its own.

You haven't been here very long, so you may or may not be one of Bloomie's or Okamoto's "online activists", so for now I make no assumptions (or assertions) if you're just here to be a putz or otherwise.

I have put a fair amount of time and money equipping myself (and family) with the means to defend ourselves (and keep what's ours), but on a day to day basis I put WAY more time and energy into the responsibilities of supporting and maintaining my household and building a retirement pension (independent from the government).

I'd say in olden times more time and energy was put into personal self-defense. How many average people walk around with a private armed entourage, or pay for and wear a suit of armor and broad swords, or spend years building a stone castle and digging a moat?

;)

7 posts and this already? I smell the faint aroma of...

Try taking a post for what it is without reading troll into it.

Iv'e known the man personally since he was 10 YO. Not referring to you here @Flopsweat, but, it's funny, and at the same time pathetic.....the way some members of the forum behave. I assure you the man is most definitely not a troll. Matter of fact, I was just fondling a few of his fire arms yesterday!

Someone(s) took the bait and here we are four pages later.

Uhhh, yeah, there were a good number of members here "Discussing". You know, like, it's a discussion forum?

Thanks to the members here that chose the high road and participated in the discussion. You never know who's reading here but doesn't participate. THEY may be the ones that need to learn, and civil discussion would help our community to be seen as a reasonable, intelligent group.

Obvious troll is obvious. This is a psy-op to gauge the mentality of RTKBAers. All information you give them will be used against you. Give them nothing.

If this guy is legit, he sure is working hard for the antis.
