Oregon is known throughout the land of the slowest drivers in the history of mankind.
But the older I've gotten I really just drive the limit now.
Heck 80mph is the freeway speed here. I do 70.

Me too. I never was an aggressive driver, but I was young once. :)

I understand the "need for speed". There's a rush with going really fast. I personally don't care how fast someone else drives, so long as they don't endanger me or mine on the road. If you drive like an aggressive jerk out there, I'll be cruising by cheering for the cop who gives you a big, fat ticket. I know it's fun to drive fast, but in traffic is no place to play games. Out on a deserted road somewhere- do what you want; just stay away from others and try not to kill yourself.

I was driving with my boys down Hwy 99 a while back, headed through farm country down to Salem. I was driving my usual speed, right around the speed limit or whatever the flow of traffic is. A contractor pickup passed us in a no passing zone. If he'd waited a half mile he could have done it safely, but no, gotta be in a hurry. Away he went, like the proverbial bat outta hell.

I told my boys to keep an eye out for him, because driving that way rarely gets you anywhere. Sure enough, a couple times we nearly caught up with him, without trying. When we got into Salem, there he was, a couple cars in front of us at a stop light.

I could go quite quickly in this - 18 years old and going strong-ish - but the chances are that I'd lose my license, and I really can't afford to do that.

You've seen this before, but I still like to show it...it's me and BIL going up the Bwlch yr Oernant in North Wales -

I did 110 or so on the road to 29 Palms in California, on my Norton N15 one day long ago. That was wide open throttle. Broke my speedometer. :) That's about it for high speed. Now I drive a diesel.:p

Boxsters get really light in the front end over about 145 mph or so. Kinda feel like they wank to take off. At least my boxster S with sports suspension did. However on that one you could quickly get to 120mph in 4th gear and you still have 2 gears left. Fun Car and remains extremely flat in the corners. Pain to work on though. Mine was very reliable other than the coolant expansion tank. The somewhat non-traditional 928s are amazing high speed cruisers.

I pay the Porsche specialist to look after mine. So far I've 'bought' it almost three times. I've spent more on this car in five years than on my 1982 M-B 380SL between 1998 and 2015, and that also includes an engine top-end and front suspension rebuild and all the other things that having a US-spec car here in yUK can enliven your day with.

pm me if you know anyone over there that wants any 928s. We'll be moving next year and I don't want to take them with.

You know, I thought that I had a pretty decent grasp on the English language...right up until you started posting locations.

'snot English, it's Welsh. Spoken in Wales. This is the weather forecast in Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic - all three spoken in the British Isles [and yes, Ireland is geographically part of the British Isles]. If you notice the word 'ARAF' painted on the road - 'SLOW' in Welsh - you'll see that it comes before the English version. that is because in THIS part of Wales, Welsh is the dominant language.

I got my Challenger up to 180 once, that was scary as hell, it was pretty light from120 all the way up, and with those vintage 1970's era brakes and only slightly better tires, not a very good idea! This car is really best between zero and 120, and a hell of a lot of fun between the two points! :D

In pretty much any car all the fun is between 0 and 120 even on a track. it is way more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car really really fast.

I've been 135mph to 165mph many times in my life. Its needed sometimes to pump the heart up a little.
But there's a few things I won't do.
Drive a mini van, and get back on a crotch rocket. Never! I love motorcycles, but the crotch rocket well I had a bad crash years ago and that did me in on those death machines.
I have had many dirt bikes, a cb750 Honda [slow], I think it was a 1976? and a 1974 H1 Kawasaki 500 triple. That bike was simply insane. I had it built by a guy who used to road race them. mikuni carbs, denco chambers ported polished etc. Bought it as a barely running rat bike for $200 and took it right over to the racer dude. He finished it and I went over, paid him and drove off. Put 500 easy miles on it then went crazy. Put another 1000 miles on it and traded it for a car. Another vehicle I was lucky to survive owning. Simply to darn much power.

I would do stuff like drive up freeway on ramps at 90 mph on the rear wheel, yes doing a wheelie. You should see other cars slam on the brakes when some crazy dude is coming straight at you, front end in the air and peeking around the vertical gas tank at you. another fav was 0 to 100 mph to 0 in a city block, every block all the way across town. You could hear that bike 2 miles away, those denco chambers at 10k rpm made a sound like noting else.

People used to tell me cops would say things like gee some day maybe it might be nice to try to catch that guy. Their problem? 160 hp smog monsters mid 1070's cop cars. They could barely catch up to grandma in a motorized wheel chair.

Crazy times. It's a wonder I'm still alive.

NO MORE kamikaze bikes for me. Though if I ever found a H1 500 for cheap at a garage sale I'd probably buy it. Same for the 750 version. I just would not be able to resist. Ride them? maybe but probably more/less just to look at and brag about.... :D

Lots of cars and bikes I missed out on buying/owning back then, I just managed to have a few and a few of those were actually kinda fast.

Had a friend in Salem who raced MX.

He had a Kaw 500 triple and then the 750. He would lift the front wheel all the way up a good hill. He was chased by cops more than once and never caught. He sold the 750 because he was afraid he would lose his license.

137 is the high for me. Documented courtesy of Oregon Highway Patrol. I was young and dumb at the time - mid '80. The Judge suspended the sentence when I when to court and told him what I was driving. '76 Pinto Station Wagon. He comment there is no way a Pinto can go that fast. I say that exactly what I told the officer. However, I neglected to tell him I replaced the 2.3L 4 banger with a 5.0L Mustang Drivetrain :D

Those Kawi triples..... Musta been 18-19. Me and a buddy were able to go into the Kawasaki shop in SLC and test drive that 500 and 750. :s0114: My buddy ended up buying the 350cc. That damn thing was plenty fast for us. He let me borrow it from time to time. I'd take it to the roller rink or Billiards Palace and impress the girls, with rides. Those weren't reed valve engines! You couldn't shift fast enough to keep 'em in the power band. Always had to keep a spare set of plugs on hand as his bike fouled plain old champions quickly. The sound those had with the baffles removed was awesome!
