I knew a young fellow that was a Corpsman in the Navy that was tagged for speeding about twelve years ago. He had a '01 Camaro SS and was driving south from Everett to Vancouver on !-5. WASP nailed him at 140 mph. He was sober, middle of the day. Arrested, ticketed, and the car impounded. He did get his car back, but the fines and insurance really cost him dearly.

I've only had, I think, three speeding tickets in my 49 years of driving.I don't want tickets, nor do I want to die/crash my car. In 1977 we bought a new Plymouth Arrow GT...Ooooo

Not ours, ours was silver.

We were coming down out of The Uinta Mountains in Utah toward Evanston, Wy in our new 1977 "Arrowo GT", just after break in. On a long straight stretch I took it up to 110. Only for a few seconds. As soon as I let of I saw the Wy State Trooper come up over the rise. In my mirror I saw the smoke from his locked up tires after we passed each other.

Said he clocked me at 92 and 89. We had to follow the cop into Evanston. We sat in the courthouse and waited for the judge to come from home to SEE us. I don't remember what the ticket cost, but they were getting their money, keeping us or keeping the car. Lucky for us the bank across the street took our check.

I loved that car. I still think it's a real good looker.

On other time I felt I was going way too fast was 92mph on a Honda Gold Wing when I worked wrenching on them, in the mid '70s.
Even though I owned a very fast 66 mustang fast back, my absolute favorite car for both handling and smooth cruising waaaaay north of 100 was my 1982 Mazda Rx7. It only had a normally aspirated 12A twin rotor (I think they rated it at 1200cc) but that car would beat plenty of way more expensive and high HP cars. It even handled better than my previous favorite for handling, my 1960 bug eye Sprite. It was gutless but handled like a go kart!

The REAL money grabbers are the speed cameras! Using another car right in front of you as a shield does not work either. I found that out by accident as I was the second car. They sent me a ticket in the mail showing my mugly ugg and my rear license plate. I suppose if you were the middle car of three crammed together you might slide. One time I was coming back from my sons place around 35th Ave heading east on Division. The time was around 01:30 in morning with almost no cars on road at all. All of a sudden FLASH, speed camera on duty, damit! Not bothering anybody that time of morning but ole camera don't care. I bet every time they download the pictures from one of these cameras they smile at how much money it makes. Just as fast as they can afford to install more they do it. I hate this gun hating, total control county, in fact the whole western part of this damn state and it's criminal governor, Miss Katie Brown nose! She is just plumb evil!
Agree 100%! Speed cameras are pure evil. And in PDX they say if it's not you driving in the photo then you have to provide the name, address, and driver's license number of the person that was driving so you can't get around it by hiding your face when it goes off.

I was watching Top Gear and Jeremey Clarkson asked Jay Leno "why don't you have any speed camera's in LA?" and Leno said, "Because people would just shoot them out."

I read the whole report, it's fairly straight forward. A couple of points. No where in it could I find anything that said it's safer to go with the "flow of traffic" if the flow of traffic is say, 75-80 in a 55, which is what people often claim is safer. No where could I find a stat that said it was more dangerous to be driving near the speed limit when others are speeding.

it did say a couple interesting things:

Normally, one critical reason is assigned per crash and as such, can
be subjective in nature. Although the critical reason is an important element in the sequence of events
leading up to a crash, it may not be the cause of the crash nor does it imply the assignment of fault to
a vehicle, driver, or environment, in particular.

About 41 percent of the driver-related critical reasons were recognition errors that include inattention,
internal and external distractions, inadequate surveillance, etc.

About 34 percent of the driver-related critical reasons were decision errors that included too fast for
conditions (8.4%), too fast for curve (4.9%), false assumption of others' actions (4.5%), illegal
maneuver (3.8%), and misjudgment of gap or others' speed (3.2%). In about 10 percent of the
crashes, the critical reason was a performance error, such as overcompensation (4.9%), poor
directional control (4.7%), etc.

I believe it is safe to assume based on those numbers that speed is one of the biggest factors in crashes, in fact the largest of the driver related critical responses is inadequacy surveillance and the speed they are going. Couple that with the simple going to fast or to fast for a curve and it kicks speeding in its various forms back up near or at the top of the cause of fatal highway accidents.

People are going to go at the speed they go at, but lets not pretend that 85-100 as many have been going since COVID-19 restrictions went into effect is somehow a safe speed for most drivers in most cars. If we were like Germany and had better roads and also MUCH MUCH more restrictive training, rules and equipment requirements then I'd say open it up, increase the speeds, but along with that speed over there comes alot of rules and responsibilities.

Didn't read the whole thread, but I love the guys that say they were going 140 mph in a 60's or early 70's US car. The speedometers only went to 120 mph unless you had a very special edition or a Corvette (or similar).

I regularly buried the speedometers on my hot rods. 105 mph in third gear in my beefed up 396, M21 1967 Impala SS.

The fasted that I clocked on my slightly modified 1978 Harley Superglide was 130 mph (no fairing). All that I could do was glance at the speedometer out of the corner of my eye. I ran out of blacktop at 60mph and rode gravel the rest of the slowdown.

You probably scared him. I know my head would be on a swivel going that speed! I was cruising my Shelby mustang between Las Vegas & Kingman Az. heading home at 02:00hrs one time. When I hit an open valley you could see all the way across at least 30+ miles, no lights, so I cracked it open. What's a good car driven by a 20yr old for anyway? 3/4 the way across I noticed headlights going fast behind me. Rather than chance it I pulled over. Sure enough, it was a highway patrol who was really red in face mad. He said I pegged his radar, what ever that meant. He told me the only reason he was not hauling me to jail and impounding car was because I pulled over. $250 fine, which was some serious money back in 1968 for me! That car came off the Ford proving grounds and was touched by Shelby the man himself. I know because I bought it off my neighbor who was a mechanic at the proving grounds. Sure wish I had that car today$$$$$$$
I guess that's possible but to be honest I A: Think he was doing the same thing I was, i.e. having a blast on a superb road in the middle of nowhere. And B: I wonder if he even knew I was there. i was at least a mile behind him. And I only spotted him from the top of that grade
To be honest, I never even thought about getting overtaken by the CHP. There was no exit, overpass or any other type of hideout for a cop on that road and no aviation visible either. Nonetheless, I admit to great luck to have that road essentially to myself and for not killing myself by hitting a pothole or an animal jumping out in front of me etc while going that fast
It was a hoot!.

It's interesting to see a bunch of "law abiding" folks on a gun forum brag about the "slap on the handcuffs and go to jail" crimes they've all committed in the past, like somehow it's OK to willy-nilly violate laws you don't agree with.

That said, here's my story...
A long time ago I was riding my old XS11 on Hwy 101, at night, no-one else on the road, wide-open stretch. My passenger, a girl, said faster, fast as it will go! That bike wasn't quick, and not terribly fast by modern standards, but it was fast enough. The speedometer only went to 80 or 85, and I buried it quickly.

It accelerated more, and more, and more. Specs for that bike say it will do 130, and I must have been close to or at that. I chickened out and let off the gas, and could have sworn I'd broke the speedometer, because it felt like I'd slowed down to 40mph before it started decreasing. I know that ain't nuthin' compared to some of you all, but it was plenty fast for me.

Looking back, I think it was pretty stupid. I hope my kids are smart enough to avoid such foolishness in the future, or at least avoid accidents or legal troubles if they do.

My plan for my grand kids are gocarts with roll cages with bigger and bigger motors until we get to real race car levels. Then we move to the track and away we go with all the safety gear etc. My son 36 yrs old, wants to start racing on the track also.

I told him some stories but he never had the muscle car bullet bike bug when he was teen age etc.

Now he is out of the service and looking for more thrills so here we go.... He said he wants me to help him entertain the grand kids... yup. Granddaughter is 4 and said just the other day she wants a race car for her birth day. Not just yet, but soon enough. :D

Hmm my 2000 ford escort cuts out at 118 and my 2000 Roush escort is set up for over 140 but I have only done 110 so far, the speedometer goes to150 in that car.Two weeks ago I got a 2019 dodge caravan got to 110. All driving was in Montana.

All driving was in Montana.

One of the somewhat safe and sane places to do this.

My brother has a framed Montana speeding ticket on his office wall. I believe the speed was 116 and the fine----$12. This was in the 90's. Last ticket I got in MT was for doing 96 and the trooper ran my visa for $16 right there on the side of the Hwy. He also said the only reason he had pulled me over was because he noticed that I had been running the cruise control at a steady speed and he was ok with it, but he noticed that I didn't kick it down while going through about a 3 mile section that had forest fire smoke blowing across the hwy. This was in the 2000,s era but before they actually had a speed limit.

US DOT HS 809 839 June 2005 Technical Report Analysis of Speeding-Related Fatal Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes

US DOT Summary Report: Development of a Speeding-Related Crash Typology

I post all the above because I just can't find any study done by DOT, or NHTSB or any of the other traffic safey or transportation groups that actually says going the speed limit when other people are speeding is more dangerous than speeding. I hear people say it all the time. I'd just like anyone to please show me where a real study says that.

Page ~50 has the studies. Some do find that speeds too far from the norm are correlated with accidents. Others don't. As always, enjoy some salt with your studies.

Ever take a good look inside the case for a red light camera? It's not cheap hardware. We're talking thousands of dollars in photo equipment in there.

I'm honestly surprised that the tweakers haven't stolen every one of them.

@Lilhigbee said going 200mph is cake.

not really
I have seen 200MPH several times on my way to going fast.

Ever take a good look inside the case for a red light camera? It's not cheap hardware. We're talking thousands of dollars in photo equipment in there.

I'm honestly surprised that the tweakers haven't stolen every one of them.
Maybe we should get the word out!!

I totally don't give a crap about red light cameras as I don't run red lights and if people do, it is dangerous and these retards should be deterred.

Never mind tweakers, surprised speed cams don't get bullets more often. those do bug me, though never got caught by one. Got caught speeding plenty of times by actual highway petrol officers. I am just not combative and always respectful to those guys. Yes, sir, no sir etc. Got me out of a lot of tickets... Always answer no to the question do you know how fast you were going, sorry no officer, I had not looked at the speedometer for quite a while.

Any sort of lie or confrontational attitude gets you a ticket for sure, so does trying to lie if they catch you. I ALWAYS know pretty much EXACTLY how fast my speedo says I'm going, just not admitting to that. :D
