I have to agree 5.45x39. 2160 cartridges run $238.00. That is approx. 11 cents a round (13 cents with shipping). Cheap 9mm is about 20 cents a round. You can get an AK-74 right now for $370 shipped so you are looking at ~$650 dollars for the gun and a stash of ammo.
 
5.45 x 39 is my favorite economy round at the moment. I have a Cz52 and a tin of 7.62 x 25 too

+1. Not to mention that it's a very good round - very close to 5.56 NATO. Being based on the AK platform, the guns should be dependable too.
 
You can shoot 5.45x39 7N6 for about the same price as high end 22lr like CCI ect. My 5.45x39-AR upper has already paid for it's self in what I've saved over .223 ammo, and it's a bunch more fun to shoot than .22lr.
