Lots of good points here but it seams like every post where a pit bull is mentioned it turns into an issue with the breed. If I get time tonight I am going to start a thread about pits and other bully breeds. I been around them off and on since the mid 70s and I still own one well into my 60s but I know they are not the dog for everyone and I respect that.

So they get a rescue dog, and within 3 weeks try to do that?

Stupid games reward stupid prizes. Rescue dogs aren't for everyone, and certainly not for those who'd try to put a sweater on a dog that doesn't like it.

This hasn't a thing to do with the breed, but everything to do with temperament. When I was a boy, a family friend lived on some land west of Philomath on US 20. They had a young German Shepherd by the name of Bandit. One day bandit got into the chicken coop and killed three hens. Immediately the father took his .30-30 and escorted Bandit out to the edge of the property and shot him. Once a dog has a taste for poultry, there's no cure for it. The dog had to be destroyed.

There was no way around it.

Don't tell that to my friend. He assume its all about breed and people are blameless.

Honestly, some breeds can be a hassle but we need to hold the idiots accountable instead of pinning all the blame on the dog.

Every person that owns a dangerous dog says it wouldn't hurt a fly. Why then, is it always pits or Rotties that seem to lose their minds? Could it be because they are too big, too strong? You never hear about packs of Fifi dogs our running around harrassing and attacking. Is this only prejudice?

I was recently in elk camp with a pit that belongs to my best friends daughter. Great dog! Scared the hell out of me when I opened the trailer door, and again when it wanted to lick my face. She's a sweetie but having been bitten by fight and guard dog breeds I'm not ready to put complete faith, my a**, and my face on the line. I'll stick with sporting breeds, working breeds, or companion breeds thank you very much.

What happened to the pit bull breeds is terrible... they used to be a working breed, then they got turned into a fighting breed. How long will it take to breed those traits out?

It will probably never happen as long as people value the fighting trait. I am wary around dogs as they like to bite me. First time I got bit I was about 6 months old in a stroller as my mom was taking me on her walk. The dog just came over out of it's yard and bit me. I have gotten bit by dogs every since then for the last 65 years, probably 20 times. The last time was my wife's Chihuahua a little over a month ago. Dogs just don't like me. Now cats it is a totally different story.

Honestly, if a dog is trying to keep you from putting a sweater on it you should stop. Really need to hold people accountable in situations like this.

As harsh as it sounds they honestly deserved it.
after a struggle to put a sweater on the dog Friday, police said.
Dog no want sweater, dog gonna let you know.

I guess I'm the exception. If you read my post, I stated very clearly that mine is watched VERY closely. I would never, ever say she wouldn't hurt a fly. In fact, when strangers ask if she's friendly, I just reply, "Nope." I don't necessarily think she would bite anyone but I don't know that she wouldn't so I try to keep her out of any situation where she might feel threatened. Now, if some idiot were to break into my house or aggressively approach my wife or daughter, she's free to go to work.
FWIW, I've never been bitten by a Pit, GSD, Rot, Doberman, or any bully breed. Maybe it's because breeds like that command a bit of cautious respect, maybe it's just luck. I have been bitten by black labs, a yellow lab, a golden retriever, and nipped by more pocket dogs than I can remember. The meanest, most aggressive dog I've ever known was a cute, fluffy Shiba Inu. I truly feel that dogs are dogs and we need to read the signs they they are giving us, however subtle they might be. Some breeds are just better equipped to deliver a memorable "no". I can guarantee that Scarface was giving all the signals that he wasn't interested in wearing a sweater. It really wasn't his fault that those geniuses weren't listening.

Most aggressove dog I've ever seen was a chow chow. Its always the cute ones. o_O

Wisdom I got from a pet store: If its got teeth, it can bite. Combine that with morons and crap is bound to happen. Breed doesn't matter if people are stupid to begin with.

Humans have trained and bred pit bulls to fight and now that instinct is engraved in the dog. Just like greyhounds even if they have never ever been trained still are really damn fast. They were bred to do that and are very good at it. It just takes one wrong move to piss them off. That's why only people who understand how the animal acts and how it was bred should have them.

You don't treat a "rescue" dog the way you would one that is raised in a loving, affectionate environment. The poor dog wasn't accustomed to humans handling them in this fashion. Their failure to recognize this resulted in a tragedy. Obviously, the dog wasn't in the right hands.

This is what comes from failing to live in the "real world". People think all situations will turn out the way it does in the cloying, sappy sentiment depicted in motion pictures. It just doesn't work that way.
