Quite a few "adult content" bloggers have moved over to MeWe from Tumblr, and some from NewTumbl when NT recently went stupid with removing tags/search by tag and making it pretty much "everything you don't want to see is in your feed!"

Oh look!
Another non-bigtech free speech site!

Does that mean...

I recommend mewe.

I admin a large reloading page on farcebook. We have started migrating our page to mewe. Its difficult with 80k+ members on farcebook and years of information it is a large migration.
We have seen an uptick in membership @ mewe in the last month.

Somewhat tangentially related.. certain video sites *coughs p---hub, coughs* have very recently gone through a great purge of two categories of videos... "Amateurs" and "animation" , :s0001: Thus eliminating a lot of previously awesome content and causing users to flee to other places on the net :s0113: again, I wouldn't mind if the entire internet gets unplugged permanently.

I'm on MeWe - are you a group or how do I find you?

I'm not sure that's true - care to prove it?
In truth, I cannot. I misspoke. My conclusion was that it was created for the far right due to its current use and the political associations of its founders. That being said, I have found that it's creator has claimed that it was originally meant for a bipartisan audience. I apologize for the misleading statement.

However, I think it is fair to say that it has been widely embraced by right wing users more than left wing users. Also, left wing ideals are more heavily moderated on the site than right wing ideals.

When people are denied a platform - don't be surprised when people are forced to accept their situation and act for themselves.

I'm also not sure that's true. Evidence would be good.

I strongly suspect that the moderation is even handed and leftists are not used to being moderated, so it seems harsh on their pristine baby-pink backsides.

The January 6th rally is paying HUGE dividends for the left. It's been an avalanche of bad news on Parler (RIP), Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

Republicans are on their heels. Top Republicans like McConnell and Cheney are supporting the impeachment of Trump. For what? So some Q-Anon kooks could play Seal Team 6 at the Capitol building, kill a cop, and piss away any good will the Republicans had left?

That right there. I am a former conservative who now calls himself a centrist... this whole thing has been a slow motion train wreck for conservative causes. In one day, the left's last five years of demented screaming about Trump's fascism was gifted a ton of credence, and it's not just gonna go away all of a sudden. MAGA jumped the shark, and now we're all going to have to deal with the consequences. If this is what conservatism is now, I can't be a part of it... and there are a lot of people who share that view. Trump just lost a ton of support, and the GOP will suffer for a long time regardless of what happens.

Was any of this worth it? Three Supreme Court Justices, a few hundred miles of southern border fence, some tax cuts accompanied by massive federal deficits, and a new resurgence of public support for the far left. Was any of this worth it?

Who purged all the BrotherGlacius posts? I'm seeing them quoted (late to the party of this thread) and there are some genuine points they are trying to make that are actually worth debating on their merits.

Also, there's a little bit of irony in how the board is behaving toward what may have been trolling (and probably was) in what BigTech is doing. They've openly moved from platform to publisher in terms of how they're treating content. That was one of the big cruxes around the argument that section 230 needs to be re-thought/repealed. There's also a discussion around these large social media platforms in the current age of information - do they hit the definition of utilities and therefore need significant regulation?

The libertarian core of my dark little heart generally gets squeamish at that idea, but I'm not a purist. When you have large platforms that have significant influence over the hearts and minds of people, there's a very justifiable conversation to have IMO to rip these platforms away from how they're managed and treat them like utilities to provide universal public value.

And to the unasked question - where does it stop? I think the media companies need to be managed separately and have some of their civil protections stripped from them, where media can print what they want, but selling bias as journalism that encroaches on reputations of others needs a lowered bar in terms of financial accountability. I think papers like the Times or WaPo should have to pay for their woke and oft perceived libelous BS.

Me too.

I think just making such sites have clear and explicit terms of use, and if they change or go beyond those terms they simply become a publisher and not protected by section 230. A catholic discussion site doesn't have to accept porn, DU doesn't have to tolerate conservatives, etc but if a place claims to be a place for open, legal conversations (such as Twitter has) then they need to be that.

On a semi-related note, a WSJ review of messaging apps and their privacy.

I'm glad I jumped to Signal when Snowden recommended it. Of course, now it's the hot sister so I'm sure it's a matter of time before they're compromised or purchased and it's time to move to something else.
