I remember when they came out in the 70's and everyone was asking why are they so clear and cheaper than the others. The reason was because of the extra fine grinding and polishing of the lenses. They did it right, but, Burris, Redfield, Leupold, Simmons, and other American made scopes manufacturers got wise and started doing the same thing and renamed their new line of scopes and most had better quality and guarantees. Nikon does make good, affordable scopes most of the time, but far from the best.
 
I have a couple Japan made scopes that are over 50 years old and still work great .and some od balls , one Savage and a. J.C. Higgins. That do a good job for plinking .
