Carrying with an empty chamber is your best solution BUT you must be able to be able to rack the slide WITH YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER very quickly, so practice , practice , practice with an unloaded firearm. NOW we will hear from most everyone about what a bad idea this is. I have carried this way for years, as has my son, who is a retired LEO. We can rack the slide as we draw very proficiently. I have had only two occasions, where I had to rack under stress but worked well for me.
Hope both your hands are empty and fully functioning when/if the time comes. It'd be unfortunate to have a hand pinned or injured and rendered useless. How fast can you draw and rack the slide with one hand before getting rounds on target?

Oh yea. Add stress and pain to the mix.

Carrying with an empty chamber is MY best solution, but you must be able to be able to rack the slide with your finger off the trigger
I fixed the statement.
It may be the option you consider proper, but it certainly is not MY best solution.

I have no concerns about racking the slide while keeping clear of the trigger, but I'm not going to limit myself by needing both hands to bring my gun into action.
The last time I thought I was going to use my handgun, my left hand was kept free because it might have been needed to keep the dog at bay while the gun was being drawn. All of this happened in a split second and fortunately the dog decided it didn't want to attack me, but it was "that" close.

In regards to carrying a pistol with a round in the chamber....
I carry that way now.

However when in the Army...It was required to carry with an empty chamber.
With practice...it became smooth and easy to draw my pistol ( either a 1911 or Beretta M9 ) from a flap holster and "rack" the slide when drawing my pistol .
That said...please note the term "with practice."

If... I was able to carry at school...I would go back to carrying with a unloaded chamber...and take a long look at holsters.
I work at an elementary school , often with escalated kids..which can turn into restraining or escorting them.
More often than not....I will get random hugs from kids.

All of the above means that I would need to keep my pistol ( Colt Series '70 Government Model ) away from a kid.
So for my peace of mind...carrying with an unloaded chamber would be helpful...if somehow , however unlikely a kid got my pistol from my holster.
A double retention style holster would be worth checking out as well.

In any event....
Saying that one specific way of carrying is best for all....is wrong.
Every situation is different.
You need to carry in a way that works for you...For the situation that you are in.
Which , even then may vary and need to change for you depending on the circumstances of the moment or day.
