Dang man airport screenings just went up a notch for you. Might be worthwhile getting TSA Precheck if you plan on doing any flying. Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully your recovery goes fast. :)

You need a better diet.

Mine includes Bacon.

It is popular note all the blogs/posts/foods etc -> Keto.

Meat + Veggies = OK.

No sugar, no starches.

Bacon. In fact, bacon has micro-nutrients you need for the diet.

Heal well.
I'm all for trying the Keto diet..
My wife and daughter are Vegan.
**dont worry both are still VERY pro 2A**
Not all vegans are snowflakes... just most of them;)
They are MAKING me eat their rabbit food. my daughter is sort of an idealistic teenager, and has watched so many podcasts and read so many blogs that confirmation bias has her completely anti keto.
Since they are the ones cooking for me for the next couple months, I'm stuck with what they bring me.
It's the source of much debate around here.
Am I not suffering enough?!?!

So this scene has been on my mind since my fall.
It would have been a much better story if I was a famous writer and had a super fan rescue me from a car wreck... nope I've been hobbled.... but my Kathy Bates was a stupid concrete step in some dudes driveway...

Im staying positive and looking on the bright side....
I have a whole new respect for paraplegic folks!
I can take some solace in knowing this is temporary...
A fellow NWFA member called and chatted me up today. I was complaining about having to crawl on my hands and knees to the toilet and then struggling to get up to get seated, and he pointed out that it could be worse...
if my arms were unusable instead I couldn't wipe my own arse, or do the other things that we need hands for. I can think of one or two "tasks" that would be mighty challenging.
Hurray for hands!

Sorry you got so wrecked. I've blown out both ankles 3x each, Busted fib, Dislocation of left elbow, 3 broken ribs, Broken and dislocated hand (brawlers fracture) 400 stitches in my legs from going through a sliding glass door, Separated shoulder 2x as well,

22 STITCHES IN MY HEAD (FROZEN SOLID 12 LB CHUM SALMON) fell off the conveyor belt and him me in the head on its way to a hopper) so I know how it is.

I've invested in some very sturdy boots from Danner that stabilize my ankles. When they get really bad (If I am out in The canyons hunting Chuckar) I'll wear a lace up brace made by sweed-o. They have semi rigid plates in them and add compression and keep the joint sincere under extreme use.

I've also started choosing my battles as far as activities and err on the side of caution.

The main thing I did to prevent injury was give up drinking.

yikes! ankles are the worst! ive broken mine a few times, sprained each of them half dozen times and rolled them MANY times. it suck man. i hope you heal up soon!

on the bright side...you can still wipe your own @$$ so theres that :):D

Hope you heal up fast.

The lesson learned is their are Just some things you can't prep for. It is better to temper SHTF preps with real life preps like savings and retirement funds, although those are far less sexy and fun.

The 2nd lesson is yes, in a SHTF situation, you would be dead, or severely crippled. It is important to be part of a group that would be able to watch out for your family. This is the hard part to find.

Lastly, make sure you get enough protein and calcium in that rabbit food! Not good to starve an injury!

....I could bore you with stories of ...."a friend".....who spent 4 months in hospital traction and then a year in a full length body cast....to help compare notes on post injury survival tactics....

These kinds of injuries are a bit like the intense fires that sweep the sagebrush desert of SW Idaho now & then. Close study of such events years ago produced one convincing study that without such travails the terrain would be considerably less productive. While sage & tumbleweed & cheet grass are low level fuels, they burn hot & leave marvelous ash to nurture new growth.

May your recovery be swift.

That looks nasty. So sorry. Here's to fast healing, high pain tolerance, and effective PT.
How do you prep for this?
  • Make sure you have a doc who's cool about Rx'ing morphine
  • A good video streaming service
  • Lots of markers and a rad artist for your cast
I've broken my jaw, L5 vertebra, shoulder, fingers and ankle, and while the PT for the L5 was the worst, the ankle was by far the most painful.

Oooo, sorry man!!!

Prep for SHTF: Watch where/how you step.

Ok, my wife suffered a bimalleolar (both bones) ankle fracture in July of last year. She is still doing PT for it. She was completely immobile but I rented a wheelchair for her and it was too large to get to the bathroom so I got her one of those walkers she could turn around and sit on and she wheeled all over the house. I wanted to get her one of those scooters folks with ankle injuries use but she is having balance problems so no go on that. But two things really helped: an extended gripper to pick up things or get items off shelves, and a bath chair with a sidecar so she could scoot over and do the shower thing. She also had an elephant condom so she didn't get her cast wet.

They will be recasting you every so often... you might enjoy the wonderful color choices... small things. ;)

Ummm, for books... do you have a Kindle, a Nook, or a tablet? You can check out Ebooks online from the library. The bigger libraries have big selections to choose from.

May 19th will be my third anniversary of when I broke my right ankle. The so called specialist misdiagnosed the ankle. She looked like a teenager and the first time I saw her I wasn't impressed with her because she was wearing a pair of tennis that weren't even tied. If course the fact that her name was Clinton:mad: also didn't help! I just hope you don't have the sale kind of problems I have had. I go into the surgery for the third time in the morning to remove the plate and give screws. After that it will be a month to six weeks of recovery.

Best wishes to you and your family.:):):)

After a motorcycle accident in 2000, my right leg was completely shattered between my knee and foot. I spent almost six months in a wheelchair. I have a titanium rod in my leg. The doctors couldn't quite figure out what position to put my foot in, so they took their best guess.

They almost took the leg, they were waiting for the extreme swelling to cut off blood flow. It turned a lovely eggplant purple. I went back after 3 months and tried to get them to cut it off.

After 6 months when I got into crutches, I lost balance fell and broke my arm.

Btw take it easy on the pain killers after a while I was getting homicidal/suicidal.

Yeah it was a bad couple of years, still can't run, and my pro dancing days are over, but I deal.

That is a tough break. We both broke our ankles within the past 5 years. Not nearly as bad as yours, thankfully. However, we now have two different sized boot casts and two sized of crutches stored, just in case. His break happened when we were trying to evacuate due to flooding here in Reno. That was when he stopped giving me crap about saving the boot and crutches I had. He realized that when one is under severe stress is when things like that happen. Now we have a short person set and a tall person set :D
