Well went in and had my sutures removed and my cast put on...
Looks pretty gruesome in there, but I got a nice shiny green cast to cover it all up. Doc says today's X-rays looked good.
I was mistaken.. I thought there were nine titanium screws... the pic that I had was cut off didn't show the other 4:eek:
I go in in a month to get my cast changed out and see how it's proceeding.
In the meantime I'm going to have my kids help me set up a bedside reloading station so I can be a little productive for the next several weeks.
Good Times!

How in the world did I miss this??

Oh yeah......had a little zipper of my own installed a week before yours....

Heal up soon brother!

Man! That is one sweet looking pistol! If you need more to do you should definitely set up that reloading bench. It's hard to go from always being active to bed ridden.
Streaming services have become like cable, a million things on but nothing to watch!
Hope you can keep yourself busy and have a speedy recovery.

Trust me, eating your greens makes ya feel better... ;)

I'll get the bench set up in here soon enough... I have to figure out some ergonomic issues first.

I'm getting plenty of greens, and I'm sure if I was eating like before I'd be 500 lbs by the time I was healed. I gained 80 pounds after my last accident, and I could actually walk after that one. Thanks to this diet I have actually lost a few pounds since going down even without any exercise...

Sweet Scar buddies! What did you do?
Is that your "action" arm? Cause that might explain why youve been a little cranky lately... :p

@Saffir mentioned you had something with your arm... but he said he was going to make sure you could still wipe your own arse before committing to a visit because nobody is that good of a friend.
That's what brought up the "at least I have my hands"post earlier...
We're your ears burning? :D

That reminds me.. I didn't show the pic of the other side...
They put a zipper over there too...
You can see that it took some damage externally during the fall, a nasty little boo boo there where the bones tried to come out for some air.
All told
13 screws
1 plate
And 19 stitches(externally at least)

Huge wake up call!
A couple days ago I was walking to my car, stumbled on a step, and ended up spraining my right ankle then completely obliterated my left. Broke my fibula, and my tibia.. my foot was pointed backwards and the pain was like nothing I've ever felt... It was ugly!
Well just look at the X-ray... This was one for the books!

Ambulance was there in 10 minutes. They had me to the hospital, x rays were taken, And before I knew it I was waking up from antistesia with my foot pointed back in the right direction. All within 2 hours of initial injury.

I was taken to a nice quiet room where I was attended to by very sweet, and attractive nurses...by the next afternoon I had a plate and nine screws, all made out of titanium, holding everything together. I was sent home with all the medication I need to ease the pain, reduce the swelling, and minimize the chances of getting an infection, and instructions to stay off my leg, and keep it elevated for at least 2 months.
...so 2 months of being bedridden, and I can't even use my "good foot" to hop around on because it is sprained bad enough to keep me laid up for a few weeks on it's own. With any luck, I'll be walking again within a few months... albeit with a limp and limited range of motion in my left ankle.
In the meantime I am helpless. I can't get myself a sandwich.. I can't support my family. I can't even make it to the bathroom...

I just finished the latest book from A.Americans home series, and I am 3/4 of the way through James W. Rawles "Patriots"... So grid down situations are heavy on my mind..
Had this happened under those circumstances... Survival would have been impossible.

I don't know how to reset broken bones... I don't have a supply of titanium plates and screws. I can't even get out of bed for the next two months let alone provide for or protect my family.

#1 priority for prepping has to be health. Get into the best physical condition possible and maintain it. if I were 75 pounds lighter, I'd probably be fine. The extra weight, along with other existing medical issues made a common stumble absolutely disastrous even with the luxury of having first responders there within minutes to stabilize and transport me to highly skilled physicians that are fully supplied with state of the art equipment to repair the damage.

I just stumbled on a stair!

Lots to think about, and lots of time to think about it!

Get well soon

Hey, that's a good thing! At least this seems to have motivated you to get in better health!
Are you pumping irons to help keep that upper body strength?
Don't want all your muscle in one forearm, don'tcha know!
;)

I can imagine pulling the press might be a little dificult if you are stuck on your back.
Try to resist testing any new loads in the fireplace, I know it's tempting.

"How do you prep for this...?"

1. Buy that walker, wheelchair, cane, and crutches before you get hurt.

2. Select a single-level home before you get hurt.

3. Store 3 years of firewood before you get hurt.

4. Chores and maintenance before recreation....before you get hurt.

Hope this helps.

May 19th will be my third anniversary of when I broke my right ankle. The so called specialist misdiagnosed the ankle. She looked like a teenager and the first time I saw her I wasn't impressed with her because she was wearing a pair of tennis that weren't even tied. If course the fact that her name was Clinton:mad: also didn't help! I just hope you don't have the sale kind of problems I have had. I go into the surgery for the third time in the morning to remove the plate and give screws. After that it will be a month to six weeks of recovery.

Best wishes to you and your family.:):):)

DAYUUUUM Mike, I'da ran as fast & far from that one & got a 2nd or third opinion....:eek::eek:

Heck ya it does... You've given me an awsome optic for hindsight magnification... I see it so clearly now!

The wife wanted me to sell the shower chair... nope! This is the second time we've needed one. First was for my blown appendix operation, second was for the wife's ankle... who knows what will happen next but someday something will I'm sure!

My chair, crutches, cane, and walker haven't been used in 18 months...I bought them after the fact(s) too...hopping around on a good leg for three days took me completely out!

Our new water tank is near the house...no more falling on an icy driveway for me (I hope).

Send a PM if you need any help @ your HQ.

I actually had shower chair....not allowed to shower(have to sponge bath and use lots of baby wipes to stay clean) but I use it for getting around the bathroom...

I actually have a lot of stuff that will be useful in the coming weeks as I start trying to get around more... a couple walkers, a fancy wheeled one with a seat, wheel chair, walking boots, crutches, and even an electric mobility chair, but what I really need is one of those little scooters that you kneel on with your bad leg and scoot around with... my house is a two story split level, and the halls and doorways are kinda narrow for a wheel chair so I've just been crawling when I need to get across the house. the real challenge is getting outside and up to my car for appointments... lucky I've only had to once. Exhausting!

It wasn't until the 3rd one who finally figured it out. If course, I suppose I could say it was the 4th because my PCP also got it right the first time. Needless to say I have fired the first and third ones and I doubt I'll be letting the second one get his knife anywhere near me! That misdiagnoses has really changed my life and I can't say it's been for the better.:mad::mad:

Glad it wasn't worse such as a broken hip when you went down, and thanks for posting this as a reminder to us all. I'm glad you shared the importance of physical fitness in preparedness because NOTHING is more important. We can't stop the aging process, but we can take care of ourselves and make the most of where we're at (I'll be 50 this year).

I've said it before and I'll say it again: There are lots of guys who can tell you what the best caliber is for deer hunting, self-defense, and woods protection, and they have the latest and greatest high-tech gadgets and survival gear, but they couldn't walk a mile to save their own arse!

Hope you beat the odds getting back on your feet.

What?

My wife got a clear rubber thingy that goes over the cast and seals around the leg above the knee, thereby not getting the cast wet. Got it at the Tri-City Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Clinic. $25... they are also available online.

Is there some other reason they don't want you to shower?
