The bigger issue and hopefully has been looked into is will the FFL it's going to accept an out of state transfer from a private party. Around here I tried three before I found one that didn't have an issue with it.

The question at hand seems to be:
Can a non-FFL ship a handgun?

Yes, a non-licensee can ship a handgun to an FFL licensee by a common carrier (e.g., UPS, FedEx, et al.). I linked to and quoted the ATF regulations earlier in the thread. Reproduced below with emphasis added:

May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm or ammunition, prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm and requires obtaining written acknowledgement of receipt.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a)(5), 922(e) and (f); 27 CFR 478.30 and 478.31]
Cheers. :)

I had a PROBLEM with UPS .
I told them it was gun PARTS .
AND they wouldn't take it so I went to USPS no PROBLEM. I was just shipping parts and UPS wouldn't do it .
Pistol grip BCG and safety switch.
But because I said the EVIL WORD ."GUN".
THAT WAS IT

I ship gun parts, and I don't say a thing. There is no law that says I have to, and what they don't know won't hurt them. On rare occasion, they ask me what is inside, and I say "Parts". ;)

I'm going to Fedex today. I have color copies (front and back) of my ODL. I have color copies of the receiver's FFL. The handgun is unloaded and well packaged.

I'll update with my experience.

Legally, YES you can. Whether it is accepted or not seems to be dependent on the counter person. Around here we are pretty much a hunting or gun culture, so no problems. However, YMMV.

I think my PROBLEM is that I always buy insurance .and then they asked me what it is.
And I didn't think about it I just said gun parts.

BTW, the last handgun I shipped, I chose to ask my FFL to ship it... after dropping my jaw when UPS gave me their price!!!:eek::eek:

"I unfortunately had an FFL send one back because it came from a private party(me). After the owner called me yelling and screaming and threatening to report me to anyone with the power to put me in federal prison. Scum bag shop owners like that are the reason I put in the work for an FFL."

Royd Jackson from The Gun Broker called ATF to report me for sending a firearm directly to an FFL, ATF explained the situation to him, and I never again stepped foot in his store.

Like I said... my experiences....
It's preety grey area.
I was told by the lady at the post office that they don't ship firearms period... went to the Fed Ex place and they said they dont ship period... went to the UPS facility and they took it( shotgun) but said they didn't do pistols. I think if you go to 10 shipping locations you'll get 10 different answers. Also depends on the state your shipping to.. some states require ffl to ffl for all shipping.

If they were smart they would design a shipping box like a safe or lock box with a combination lock .you ship the gun and when the guy on the other end gets it.
He calls you and says he got it and you give him the combination.
That way nobody can get access to the gun except for the two people in the deal

:mad::mad: I guess there are some idiots with FFLs!

Here's what happened at the Salem FedEx shipping center:

I walked in, hi, I'd like to ship a handgun.

Is it loaded?

No.

Do you have the receiver's paperwork?

Yes. Here's the receiver's FFL and a color copy of my driver's license, front and back.

You want insurance?

Sure.

Great. We have to ship next day air because it's a handgun. What's your phone number?

No problem. Number.

Okay, swipe your card for me. Here's your tracking number and the expected date of delivery. Have a nice day.

Thanks.

Disagree... legally it's not grey at all, but there are some dummies out there that either don't know what the law is, or don't care. I think that just means we need to ship more guns so that we can get these idiots trained!!! ;)

I didn't mean legally... never a grey area there...
Just what shippers will do.... ultimately what you can and can not do is up to them wether they are right or not.

FedEx express" is the way to go for shipping handguns cheaper, and they don't just ship overnight either. Whoever said that pharmy is full of chit. I know because I have used thier Express shipping many tmes and had private guys ship me handguns via FedEx Express to my FFL Dealer also. They have a 1 day, 2 day, and 3 day delivery options, which the shipping rates get cheaper according to the more days added that they ship it by. So unless you are in a hell fire hurry, just ship them via the express 3 day option. That's from a private guy to the FFL dealer, but it does NOT have to be shipped over night. None of it is hard to do to ship, just look up thier rules online and call FedEx s main number, they will tell you, same with UPS.

Were you surprised? That was pretty much the answer that was given in the first two posts, and several others in the last 59 posts.. Now, how much did it cost? That's what got me when I shipped a gun. The cost!
