I purchased my holster (phlster enigma) the day my permit was approved and had been dialing it in while wearing it in the house with an unloaded pistol.

Then I received my permit in the mail and Today was the day when I went grocery shopping, conceal carrying it for the first time. I called it my first dry run where the pistol was unloaded.

I practiced slow and firm draws from the appendix position and feel very comfortable but it has been with an unloaded firearm.

How do you mentally prepare yourself to start carrying with one in the chamber? Is there a slow transition to it?

Thanks in advance from a newbie
Slow or fast...the transition to carrying with a loaded firearm should be made at your speed.
You are carrying your handgun...in your situation.
What someone else does...may work well for them...and their situation...it may not work for you.
There is no one sized fits all answer for self defense or carrying a firearm.

I would suggest that....
You practice carrying all the time...even around the house....while you are doing everyday chores / activities...
To include using the bathroom...which may sound weird / silly now...but ...
Not so much when you are using a public restroom.

I would also suggest that no matter what "safety" comes with your handgun....
Keeping your finger off the trigger and always being aware of where your muzzle is pointing...
Are the best safeties for any firearm...at any time.
Practice drawing and re-holstering with your finger off the trigger , till it becomes second nature...as in you can do so without thinking about it....

Also be aware that some holsters are better at not snagging the trigger than others...it is wise to check your holster to see if any part of it touches the trigger at any time....

Speaking of holsters...
You will go through a lot of different holsters and holster designs until you find the ones that work for you , your handgun...and how you carry.
A good gun belt is a must have here...again..you go through a lot of them to find the one that works.

Simply put....
All of the above is up to you and your time table.
Practice and more practice till what you want to have happen becomes an automatic response.
Then after that....check yourself...if in doubt , take a look...don't be that guy who says after a mishap :
"But I thought I did...."

My buddy was having this same problem. He installed a new after-market hair trigger for his new dot sighted wunderpistol but was afraid to carry it. I slapped his sorry arse and loaned him a hammerless snubby just so he could get his dick wet.

lol, not really but you never hear this fear when it's a DAO anything.

I am just going to say that public restrooms were the most hard part for me to learn. I just want to reiterate the wisdom of this.
