So seeing as how I have no children, why should I have to pay for schools?

Read my 2nd post. I was being sarcastic, as that's always how they try to pass tax increases. There are plenty of other government projects that they could pull this money from (PGE park renovations, Max expansion, etc). Also, why did state employees get raises this year? No one at my company got a raise. Maybe some of that money could have gone to the "children".

If we made it a requirement that all the children of politicians had to go to public schools, I wonder how quickly they would all suddenly have funding.

<broken link removed>

And so it starts !!

WINSTON, Ore. -- The owner of a struggling restaurant said passage of Measure 67 will be the death blow for his diner.

Nic Scevers said the taxes imposed by Measure 67 will force him to close Carrie's Diner in Winston, Ore.

That HAS to be true, and we should all believe him without any questions asked. No business owner with a failing business would EVER use a new tax as a covering excuse for a closure that was caused by his lack of success or business acumen. Because no one would EVER have any reason to say "the government screwed me over" if he could just man up and admit he didn't make it. People in general don't usually try to blame their failures on others.

So I believe him.

Have you ever worked in the private sector? If so how long ago?

NOW, here is a Strong Suggestion to ALL business owners. I propose that ALL sales receipts and invoices add a line at the bottom to show an additional amount to cover the new tax: Measure 67. THEN the public, the ignorant masses, will know WHO IS GOING TO PAY and we are just here to send their money to Salem for the Democrat legislature to spend.
Simple and Straightforward!
I am talking about the Gross receipts tax, not the so called minimum tax. (which is a lie)
It's a sales tax, folks!

Regarding the OP, did anyone bother to do the math to see how much this "small diner" must be doing business wise to incur an additional $10,000 in taxes? Did you bother to see if the story adds up or if it is simply a case of exaggeration? I also own a restaurant and for me to incur an additional $10,000 my sales would have to surpass $4,000,000.00 in a single year if I had normal expenses and deductions.

Here is the official flow chart that will help you.

I have observed over the years money always being sucked up by pay increases. If a district has some money, it all to often causes a strike until they give it up to pay raises.
For the kids, is always a lie to soften up taxpayers.
Just like "let me be clear" always preceeds an attempt to confuse you.

Actually it would be more like 1 million in gross sales. And the way I read it, this is charged on the gross sales not net profit.

That's my view of modern capitalism. Where I work the people who do most of the work, and the people who make all the money, are different people.

Do CEOs work 5000x as hard as the average citizen?"

Have you ever got a good paying job from a poor man? Somebody has to make money for it to go to employees.

Problem is todays schools on all levels don't teach capitalism and how for you to be a sucessfull business person . They teach you to work for others so you can never stand on your own. Socialism depends on the hard working to support the worthless who won't work. Capitalism is for people who want to reach as high as they can go.

I'm happy to say where I stand. I proudly voted yes, my DA friend in Portland would probably have been laid off otherwise (and Multnomah county's laid off enough DAs already).

I'm sorry to hear about this restaurant... But I wonder how many businesses would have closed w/o the personal spending of the government workers whose jobs were saved. Even when they're being spent inefficiently, it's not like state tax dollars are being thrown into a black hole somewhere.

Federal taxes, that's a different story..

Your friend has to be educated and can certianly get another job. How did your vote affect those in business and the unemployed? Haveing lived through the spotted owl depression and seeing people living in their vehicles I kinda sense you don't care about them. By helping the measure pass the increase in divorces and suicides along with crime should weigh on you a bit, one would hope anyway.

Things you do allways come back to you. When the economy goes down big time you will see first hand what it means for others to take your life from you. Never take another mans millstone, it's all he has to live by. Take the job and kill the man and his family.

Yup, along with "we will be laying off cops, and releasing dangerous prisoners from the jails, if you don't vote these taxes in"..............

What on earth are you ranting about???

I don't get it. What does divorce and suicides have to do with this?

You "kinda sense you don't care about them"?

Sorry JJ. I'm just not following your discussion.

Yeah, but most of these CEOs are anything but entrepreneurial risk-takers who get their jobs through hard work and grit. Some certainly are - and I salute them... But most of 'em are just overeducated sons and daughters of privilege who make millions in bonuses regardless of how well the serve their stockholders and have compensation packages set by hand-picked committees of board members dependent on them for their (also overpaid) opportunities to "serve."

The politicians just want more money to spend. The are now practicing divide and conquer. Tax the rich, tax cigarettes, tax liquor, next will be tax ammo. I heard that WA is trying to tax candy. If they put them all in one bill, it would never get voted in. So they do it in small bits and by the time they reach full circle, they will have hit everyone with out us knowing it.

For the tax the rich thinking group: Someone making 50k a year at the 9% tax rate they are paying $4500 in Oregon state income taxes. Someone making 250k is already paying 22k in taxes for using the same roads, schools and other public services as the person only paying $4500. But they are in the minority, so the public voted to take even more from them.

To the original post of this thread, I only live a few miles from that restaurant and am a police officer in that town and am a police officer in that townand have eaten there several times. I also ate there years ago when owned by the original owner under a different name. The original owner made a lot of money from that restaraunt he sold it off to focus more on his expanding businesses in the lottery bars.

While the food was still good, the "new" owner began losing business because his prices were rising and rising. I understand the concept of prices increasing for everything but in a small town like Winston people aren't willing to pay the kind of prices he was charging. Then to further compoiund his problems he would close on Sundays and then raised prices on his menu again.

While I don't disagree that part of tyhe closing may be due to the new taxes the owner was on the brink of closing as it was. I am not supporting the new taxes just saying that there is more to the story than is reported by the news....shocking, I know!!

Like I said depressions cause divorce and leads to suicides. The biggest cause of divorce is money problems. When your government causes a depression they know full well the toll it takes on families. The vote to raise taxes retroactively on business will cause alot of people to lose their jobs. They have allready killed jobs in Oregon and now they will finish them off.

What I am saying is that kills people and ruins their families.

I saw it when the government killed the timber industry here to protect the spotted owl. Don't like seeing the government do it again with the help of the voters.

Thanks Yankeefan. I think that some of the posters had already surmised that there was more to this closing than taxes.

Appreciate the local feedback.

Yes, he's a very talented lawyer and can certainly get another job now, earning twice as much money as he currently does filing lawsuits that you'd no doubt consider frivolous. Instead he chooses to work in public service keeping criminals off the streets (without, I might add, the overly generous PERS and other benefits previous generations of government workers had). If he were laid off, he'd do fine. But there'd be dozens and dozens more identity thieves, chop shop operators, and other scum with nobody around to prosecute them.

Those people have been around since the begining, it's who you work for. Class envy should mean you work harder to have what they have but government taxes you so the little guy never wins. Government is the villan in all this and they play people for suckers with this class envy.

The average government employee now gets over $70,000 a year from you and the greatest benifits possible. 28 paid holidays and sick leave. High dollar insurance and the best retirement of any of the working class. They are the ones spending trillions of your dollars and turning you against the people you work for.
