700gal bambi bucket with pump. The pump can fill the basket in seconds from rivers & ponds.

Or they can be completely submerged. Chinook fills bucket:

Rappelers are usually the Initial Attack force.

Are they actually top filling that bucket or are they still using the pumps? You can see him bleed off some of the weight shortly after he gets the bucket up.

Here are some close of pics of the 4 pumps built into the bucket. This is a smaller one off a Vertol, not a Chinook. IIRC they are about 1200 gallons.

Both. The smaller bucket I've seen were top filled. Typically tho the larger ones that the heavies use (except for the snorkel rigs) had the big single pump installed. They use it where they cannot dip very deep.

MD550 Notar (no tail rotor) In flight. These are a Type 3 (light) aircraft. Used for scouting, night IR pics, delivering light loads to spike camps, air attack (telling flights where to drop and if necessary leading them in).

Bell. Type 2 (medium lift). The most prevalent aircraft used. Various models including the older UH1 Huey.

K-MAX. Type 3 heavy. It is amazing that this small 2 rotor aircraft can lift as much as a Firehawk. They are not very good in high winds tho since they are so light and have a big wind profile.

Turbine engines on a Skycrane. Big suckers! You can see the snorkel leading to the water tank.

I would give my left nut to be part of the aircrew on one of those craft.

Me too! I was lucky enough to get into aviation in the U.S. Coast Guard and I miss it. Flew as crew in the HH52, the H3F Pelican, the UF-1G Albatross (Goat), C130. When I found out that La Grande has a fire bomber base, I asked and they laughed. It is a very closed circle as I mentioned earlier. Not to say it can't happen.

My father served in the USMC as a helicopter pilot and flew many SAR missions during his time. I have always wanted to become a pilot like he did and/or serve aboard aircraft. I am to old to join the military now so sadly that chance has slipped through my fingers
